More recently, the Astrodome was the scene of such pop cultural events as thee, Billie Jean King-Bobby Riggs "battle of the sexes" tennis match, which was attended by the Beautiful and the Brave, armed and uniformed to the teeth, and the "Millennium '73" gathering staged by Guru Maharaj Ji and his followers. Maharaj Ji compared the Astrodome to God; you have to experience them personally to know what they are, he said. The young Indian devotees of the guru say that he is God, but he was not mighty enough to cope with the vastness of the Astrodome. Amid rock music and strobe lights, he appeared as a tiny glob on a throne of blue Plexiglas atop a 35-foot-high stage.
