… Because the Western Elite Has Brought Religious Illiteracy

This is a long and interesting attack by Roszak of the "ethical vacuum" of modern intellectual life which contains no validity in "the pursuit of transcendent meaning". This has little relevance to Prem Rawat (Maharaji) whose teachings are an intellectual vacuum so I will quote only the paragraph in which Roszak, then Professor of History at California State University, Hayward, and author of "The Making of a Counter-Culture" mentions Guru Maharaj Ji as Rawat then called himself.

"It is really no great feat to recognize Jim Jones, Charles Manson, or the Maharaj Ji for what they are: frauds, fools or opportunists. Picking apart their doctrines is like shooting fish in a barrel. It is an easy exercise in basic cynicism, and it convinces nobody who is vulnerable to their appeal."
