Prem Rawat's First Class
Prem Rawat's organization, Elan Vital, introduced the FirstClass communication system in 1994.
Context and Function of FirstClass
Internal Electronic Network:
Built on the SoftArc FirstClass groupware platform (a popular client-server messaging and bulletin board framework in the 1990s), FirstClass served as an internal, closed-network system for Elan Vital administrators, local community contacts, event organizers, and instructors.
Centralizing Directives and Materials:
Prior to FirstClass, instructions, event announcements, and organizational policies were distributed via regional newsletters, mailers, and telephone trees.
FirstClass enabled central leadership to send encrypted, immediate, and direct guidelines from Rawat and Elan Vital headquarters directly to local representatives around the world without public exposure.
Tight Control of Messaging:
The platform allowed strict access control and hierarchical user permissions. It ensured that local group leaders and "contact persons" received precise instructions on how to handle video screenings, event registration, and student inquiries, ensuring uniform branding and messaging during the mid-to-late 1990s transition toward secularization.
