Prem Rawat's Teachings about "Guru Maharaj Ji" - In His Own Words
Prem Rawat or Maharaji (the "Ultimate Ruler") as he calls himself or Guru Maharaj Ji as he called himself until the 1980's has no compunction stating he is a unique person with power possessed by nobody else alive. The language he uses to decribe what his power is and who he is has changed but this his teachings about Guru Maharaj Ji, the Perfect Master, the Creator, the Savio(u)r, the Lord, the Master, the Living Master, the Incarnation of God, the Manifestation of God, the Embodiment of God who come(s) in(to) the world show that Rawat uses all these descriptions to refer to himself. He spoke of being reincarnated as Jesus Christ and taught that Jesus revealed the same Knowledge as himself, his father and all the other Perfect Masters including Ram(a), Krishna, Buddha, Kabir, Guru Nanak, Swarupanand (his father's guru) and others of that ilk.
His public claims about himself and his "Knowledge" have become more circumspect and vaguer in language but have remained the same throughout his career. Exactly how he could be both Prem Rawat, the Guru Maharaj Ji in a physical human form and Guru Maharaj Ji the Creator, Sustainer and Destroyer and/or the Generator, Operator and Destroyer of the universe was something he has never completely explained but, after all, it's not an easy thing to do. In public when directly questioned, he claimed to be just a humble servant of God though his lifestyle and claims when with his followers directly contradicted that. On April 7, 1979 while pontificating on the glories of Guru Maharaj Ji, he stopped, explained for any aspirants that he wasn't talking about himself and then went on to contradict that with the rest of his explanation. He was still calling himself "Guru Maharaj Ji" and the "Perfect Master" on the 31st July, 1982 but in the West he no longer uses those terms, he is now simply Maharaji, the Master. He continued to call himself "Guru Maharaj Ji" in India when speaking in Hindi.

"Peace Bomb" speech, November 8, 1970
Shiva Ji left that place, doing his pranam to Guru Maharaj Ji and saying in his heart, "O Guru Maharaj Ji, you are all powerful. What can you not do? You can do anything. I surrender myself at your Lotus Feet. Protect me, please," as you should pray in your heart when you do pranam before Guru Maharaj Ji or His picture.

I was an ordinary child. And then I used to come back home, and there was Guru Maharaj Ji, there was my father, who was, as a matter of fact, the incarnation of his time. He was true. He was perfect. And then the
whole company was holy; the whole company was Truth.

Denver, Colorado; October 12, 1974 Highly edited, next quote is original
It's been said that Guru Maharaj Ji comes, or God comes into the world, when there is a decline in religion. God comes, Guru Maharaj Ji comes, and helps the world. Why? Realize how much importance there is to it when Guru Maharaj Ji comes and tries to help you through; how much importance there is to it; how small you are compared to the whole world, and the whole world to the whole universe, and that whole universe to something called infinity. We have no idea how big it is, and how small it is.
The Living Master: Quotes from Guru Maharaj Ji

Denver, Colorado; October 12, 1974
Premies, you know when its told to premies that why does Guru Maharaj Ji come, why does God come into this world, is anytime there is a decline in religion He comes, Guru Maharaj Ji comes and helps. This is why you know premies just get blissed out and say that's so fantastic.
But that's about it. But realize how much importance there is to it. When Guru Maharaj Ji comes and tries to help you through. How much importance there is to it. How small you are compared to the whole world. Then the whole world to the universe, and that whole universe to something called infinity. That we have no idea how big it is and how small it is.
The Golden Age No. 15, November, 1974

Interview at Lucknow, India, April 14, 1975
"It is funny and ridiculous to say they have removed me from office as if it is is a public office to which I was elected or appointed," Maharaj Ji said.
"Nobody creates a guru. He is self existent. Nobody can make a guru except the Guru Maharaj Ji himself."
However, he declined to answer his mother's charges that he had started drinking alcoholic beverages, had begun eating meat instead of remaining a vegetarian, and had shown too much interest in sex.
The guru, who flew into Lucknow on Saturday after a journey from the United States, showed visible dismay when he talked about his mother.
"Mothering means caring and loving," be said "If my mother denies that to me, then my goal becomes supreme and takes over.
" I am not leaving my job. These accusations have not changed me. These will result in only further perfecting of the perfect master.
The guru said he planned to return to the United States soon without going to see his mother. The Divine Light Mission, which has its U.S. headquarters at Denver, Colo., claims 500,000 American followers and eight million in India.

Guru Puja Festival, Caracas Venezuela, 23rd July 1975
You know, I was in Denver, and I was giving satsang about Perfect Master. And like, a Perfect Master, when we call him a Perfect Master, we have just said something that we really don't sit back and try to understand. When we say Perfect Master, when we say this, this person who is infinite, call him Guru Maharaj Ji, call him Perfect Master, call him Lord, call him anything you want, he doesn't need to come into this world. You see? He doesn't.
Because he is perfect. All he has to do is one day get up and just scream through the blue skies, and say, "You! Everybody! Realize Knowledge. Otherwise I am going to do something to you guys you never dreamed of." And then he could do something that would sort out every person who realized Knowledge and is meditating, and every person who has not realized Knowledge. He could do anything he wants, because we just called him perfect, and he is perfect. And in fact, he could very well do that. He could, with a blink of his eye, make the people who haven't really realized this Knowledge, who are really into darkness, stand up two feet from the ground.
And so you can trace them exactly, wherever they are, and turn them this funny color. And then you can really imagine what a big ego hit that's going to be, what a mind blower that's going to be. Because everybody will be able to see: "Oh, you didn't realize Knowledge, eh? See what you get for that?" But he doesn't do that. He comes into this world, and bears a body just like everyone, and comes in and knocks at everybody's doors. Doesn't pressure anybody, but begs them. Doesn't make a rule, but begs them to realize this Knowledge. Tells them what it can do to them. Tells them how beautiful it is.
Élan Vital Summer 1978 Volume II Issue 2

December 10, 1976, Guru Maharaj Ji's birthday, Malibu mansion
Satsang, service, and meditation. That's what I've been saying. Love and understanding. You see, a lot of people have concepts about Guru Maharaj Ji. But Guru Maharaj Ji is there for one purpose and that is to supervise the
process of satsang, service, and meditation. There are three or four ways of looking at it, but the real way of looking at it is as a car and a driver. It doesn't matter how perfect the car can be, you need a driver for it,
and Guru Maharaj Ji is the driver of that car. It doesn't matter if you buy a thirty thousand dollar automobile, if you don't have a driver for it, it's not worth anything. I mean, you can push the accelerator down, put it
in gear, and let it go, and before you know it, it will crash. Guru Maharaj Ji is that driver who we really need, because he supervises that process. Knowledge is infinite, and we finite, so we need a bridge, we need a
translator, who is infinite and finite at the same time, who can really bring us together, and that is Guru Maharaj Ji. In my realization of Knowledge, I know that if it hadn't been for Guru Maharaj Ji, Knowledge alone
wouldn't have done wonders for me, because the wonders that Knowledge was doing already existed - I was alive! After that it was going to go nowhere. I was alive, I was breathing, playing around and so on, but when Guru
Maharaj Ji came into my life, everything became different, it became real. I couldn't lose the importance of Guru Maharaj Ji at that point and say, "Well, maybe I can just do it on my own." Because it's literally impossible
to do it. A lot of people have tried to do it, and a lot of people have tried to do it the other way around, without going through Guru Maharaj Ji at all, just going back to nature. Trying to be tuned with Knowledge in this
whole life, but I can tell you one thing, it doesn't work. They have wasted their lives completely. That's just not blunt advice, because Guru Maharaj Ji is here, and that's what makes it real for all of us. Because we can
all come together and have that huge gap covered.
The Golden Age February 1977 Number 36 and Guru Maharaj Ji's World booklet, 1980

I was watching a cartoon in Los Angeles, and it was "Bugs Bunny" cartoon. …
And the only method that is most successful, and the only method there is, is satsang, service, and meditation. And to give it all a super dose, there is darshan, and these programs, the way they're happening. So
premies, let us all really come together, let's really become one in that bond, one in that tie, one in that love, and go ahead. There's no power in this whole world that can stop us from experiencing what we want to
experience. Not even mind, if you're strong enough. There's nothing. No power in this world, that can stop us. Just - all we have to do is have faith in Guru Maharaj Ji. Have faith in me. I'm here to help you, and
I will help you. But sincerely have faith in me. Not in some, not in some way, not in some manner, or particular manner, but just have faith in Guru Maharaj Ji, period. And let it all happen, let it all begin.
The Golden Age, May / June 1977, Number 38

Guru Puja Festival, Miami Beach, Florida, July 29, 1977
So premies, I think that what we have to pursue is a lot more. You have to go beyond that point. If we receive Knowledge selfishly and say, "I want peace, I want peace, I want peace," then maybe we won't even get it.
Because what we are trying to pursue is a reason. And we have to go beyond all reasons, beyond all of what we call logic, or beyond what we call our limitations, and go into this endless depth, the endless height of that
reality, where there is everlasting peace, where there is everlasting tranquility, where there is everlasting harmony. And to realize that and to become one with it and to be able to feel that constantly -- because Guru
Maharaj Ji's Grace when we can feel it, and Guru Maharaj Ji's mercy when we can feel it, are a lot more and a lot stronger than what we can ever desire in this lifetime. Peace can come and go. Knowledge, of course, will
bring us that permanent thing. But Knowledge can also take us one step beyond.
Élan Vital, Summer 1977, Volume IV, Issue 2

Hans Jayanti, Rome, Italy, Night, 9 November, 1977
It is possible to merge with that oneness, to merge with that incredible thing, to become one with that ultimate.
That experience of Knowledge is within inside of us, because that Knowledge is within inside of us. But we need Guru Maharaj Ji, we need Guru Maharaj Ji to be able to tune that so that we can hear it, so that we can feel
it, so that we can emerge in it. And by Guru Maharaj Ji's Grace, and only by Guru Maharaj Ji's Grace, have we already reached to the experience of what we are, of what we have.
The Golden Age Number 42 and Divine Times - September/October 1978 Volume 7, Number 6 and The Golden Age, November 1978, Number 49

Kansas City, January 21, 1978
The only way to merge with that infinity is if the
finite thing goes and actually merges with it; becomes one with that. Not the finite coming down to the infinite.
But that experience of Guru Maharaj Ji - yes, maybe one day the physical manifestation of Guru Maharaj Ji has got to go because it's physical. And yet that experience that we experience in darshan is not physical,
and therefore it's never got to go, and it never goes away! It's the same experience, it's the same joy that all the saints have described in seeing Guru Maharaj Ji and experiencing darshan. And okay, of course, "darshan"
is a Hindi word. You might have a different interpretation to it. Now, what are you going to use? "Homage"? What are you going to use? Anything. I mean - and yet, simple enough: "Darshan," if you can understand the meaning
of it. Because it really is an experience. And when we experience that, we realize. Then it's very, very clear to us. And we have to be open for that. And yet, to be able to experience darshan, we have to be open to
Knowledge. Because without Knowledge, darshan is nothing. And how does the Knowledge in itself grow? How does the Knowledge in itself manifest? How does that satsang, service, and meditation in itself manifest? And
that's the most important thing in our lives now. Because that's the point that we have come to: To know what satsang, service and meditation is. And to completely merge with it, to completely become one with it, with that
satsang.
Divine Times, November 1979, Volume 8, Number 6 and The Golden Age, March 1978, Number 43

Look, it's beyond liberation. It's beyond all those things. Beyond all our concepts. In this lifetime, we have the
opportunity to realize, to be with, Guru Maharaj Ji. Be it not Guru Maharaj Ji -- you know, maybe they didn't call him
Guru Maharaj Ji -- maybe they called him Lord. Anything. To be with that power. To be with that thing. To be not
infinite, and yet to be with the infinite. To be here as individuals, and yet to be able to be next to the person who is
everything; in which everything is, and he is in everything. Guru Maharaj Ji. The Lord. All-powerful. We are here.
And only by Guru Maharaj Ji's Grace can we realize that, and see how divine this whole plan really is.
Divine Times - June/July 1978 Volume 7, Number 4

And only that pure and humble soul can then in fact turn around and surrender to Guru Maharaj Ji. Because Guru Maharaj Ji is that perfectness.
Guru Maharaj Ji is that purity. Guru Maharaj Ji is that Knowledge. Guru Maharaj Ji is infinite. And nothing finite can come into infinite
and still stay finite. That finite thing has to become infinite before it can actually merge in infinite.
The Golden Age No. 48, September/October, 1978

Maybe when I say "purpose of this life," "aim of this life," "aim of this human life," a lot of relays of concepts click on. But really, premies, to realize ourselves, to understand who we are .. if it were our associations
and our concepts and all these crazy things that we have … to get away from that and to really understand who we are by Guru Maharaj Ji's Grace, to me, is the purpose of my life. That's the purpose. And I think that
that's every human being's purpose in this world; to have faith in their Guru Maharaj Ji, to love their Guru Maharaj Ji, to see their Guru Maharaj Ji, to do satsang, service, and meditation, to realize who they are, to
become one with that most incredible thing! And it can be done.
Élan Vital, Spring 1979, Volume III, Issue 1

Hans Jayanti Festival, Kissimmee, Florida, afternoon November 11 1978
And it's so incredible. Because Guru Maharaj Ji - I know. Guru Maharaj Ji, physically, only has two ears. He can listen to one thing at one time. Two ears: but can only listen to one thing. Two eyes: can only see one thing. But it's incredible. Because everybody's prayer is heard. And as soon as it becomes sincere …
I mean, there is Guru Maharaj Ji, just waiting and waiting and waiting. Those hands that can create the world -- that can ruin the world -- are waiting on a steering wheel to drive you away from that misery and take you away from the conditions of heaven and hell and whatever, and take away all the misery.
Listen! That's incredible!
Élan Vital Volume III Issue 2 Summer 1979

Holi Festival Miami Beach, Florida, April 7, 1979
I remember once hearing that Guru Maharaj Ji sends his devotees first before he comes, so there can be some devotion which can bring him down, which can bring him into this world. And so the devotees come in this
world first. And then comes the Perfect Master. And maybe those devotees who come first aren't really devotees yet, but are destined to be devotees. And when the Perfect Master comes into this world, it's just like two
great big magnets. The attraction becomes faster and faster and faster and then "klunk." It happens.
And what an opportunity, what a setup, what a stage is then, in fact, created. We all come. All the devotees get together and with that sincere love, pray to Guru Maharaj Ji, pray to that Savior, pray to that Perfect
Master to help us.
And it's like the prayer of the devotee, "O come, save us, save me in this world." And Guru Maharaj Ji then comes. Okay, maybe there are some aspirants here and when I say Guru Maharaj Ji you might directly look at me
and say, "He's talking about himself." But no, I'm talking about Guru Maharaj Ji. What does Guru Maharaj Ji mean? Guru -- the revealer of Light. Gu -- darkness; ru -- Light. One who takes us away from the darkness and
brings us to Light is "Gu-ru." Guru Maharaj -- maha: the ultimate, raj: the ruler. The ultimate ruler. Guru Maharaj. And Ji is like the expression "sir." And you look at it, and by that I mean Jesus was Guru Maharaj Ji. He
was! Didn't he take people away from darkness and bring them to Light? So he was Guru Maharaj Ji. Obviously he was Guru Maharaj Ji. Have you heard of the word Issa-Masi? And if you haven't, that's what Indians call Jesus
Christ: Issa-Masi. And if you tell that to very staunch Christians, they'd go, "What? Never heard of this thing, Issa-Masi." But that's how you refer to Christ in India. And there is a very particular definition. The word
Guru Maharaj Ji does not fall into any category of noun, because it is not noun. Anybody may not become Guru Maharaj Ji, period. It is not like Michael. Anybody may be called Michael. Anybody may be called Marilyn. But that
is definitely not the case with Guru Maharaj Ji. Anybody is not Guru Maharaj Ji. Anybody just cannot become Guru Maharaj Ji. It is Guru Maharaj Ji himself that is Guru Maharaj Ji. And the word is a title for an action. Guru
Maharaj Ji will only be called Guru Maharaj Ji, Guru Maharaj Ji will be only called Guru Maharaj Ji, when he actually does what the word says: reveals the Light and takes away the darkness. Only then. And can you sincerely
call Guru Maharaj Ji, Guru Maharaj Ji? Before that it's not Guru Maharaj Ji. It just isn't. And when that reality becomes real, Guru Maharaj Ji becomes real. But when you can in fact say Guru Maharaj Ji and it is right,
it's because something has happened to you. You have been taken away from that darkness. And the Light has been shown to you. In yourself. And then the one who has done it is automatically Guru Maharaj Ji! And premies, Guru
Maharaj Ji comes into this world, every time. Jesus came. Mohammed came. Guru Nanak came. Shri Maharaj Ji came. Guru Maharaj Ji. For his devotees, everything. God is a myth. Guru isn't. Because in the whole realm of God,
there can be people who believe in God and people who don't believe in God. But in the case of Guru Maharaj Ji, it isn't like that. Like I said, it isn't a word.
I know that there are a lot of premies who have tried to get rid of their minds. Not only haven't they got rid of their minds, but they also have confused other premies. What do you say to that? That's how tricky that mind
can be. But only when there is a total faith in Guru Maharaj Ji, only when there is a true faith in Guru Maharaj Ji, only when there is a "let go" to Guru Maharaj Ji, that there is, in fact … See, there has to be a
displacement. And when your heart gets filled with Guru Maharaj Ji's faith and love and devotion, then that asks for more space than the mind, in fact, holds. And just because it is stronger than the mind is, it asks mind
to just split. And that concept, the craziness, the imagination, and the wildness come out. So just to surrender to Guru Maharaj Ji, to have faith in Guru Maharaj Ji, to have that devotion, to have that love -- that's
something even Guru Maharaj Ji applauds. That's something to which even Guru Maharaj Ji says, "Alright. Okay. Beautiful. Perfect."
Élan Vital, Volume III, Issue 2, Summer 1979

Guru Puja, Miami Beach, Florida, Saturday, 21st July 1979
How can Guru Maharaj Ji listen to anybody's suffering? If we complain to Guru Maharaj Ji, then we are wrong. Because Guru Maharaj Ji has already offered the solution to us. How can you complain to Guru Maharaj Ji?
You know, the case is, Guru Maharaj Ji already has his hands out and is saying, "Come on in." How can you knock on a door that's already open? And yet in our imagination, in our dreams, there is a door. And that door is
locked. And you are doing everything right, but it's the other end - it's Guru Maharaj Ji - that's goofing everything up, because that's the way your mind has it figured out. Maybe Guru Maharaj Ji one day is going to come
around to every nine thousand or ten thousand seats in this auditorium and - bam! bam! bam! - kick everybody in the butt. We're going to stand up and fly, and it will be the ultimate thing, some cosmic experience. Something similar to the beginning of the movie Who is Guru Maharaj Ji? - the psychedelic footage. All these lights and all these things happening. (In the original version of that movie, it was really something.) Our cosmic
experiences. What is cosmic? It's easy to look it up in the dictionary but it's kind of hard to attain it. Cosmic experience.
The Golden Age, October 1979, Number 55

Miami, Florida December 25, 1979
It's very simple because there you are. There's Guru Maharaj Ji, Be a devotee, have the flow of devotion, and that's all. Period. No doctrines, no dogmas, no nothing is involved. That's all that's ever required for you to be a devotee. Guru Maharaj Ji is Guru Maharaj Ji. Guru Maharaj Ji always will be a Guru Maharaj Ji. You, the variable factor, have to stabilize, and become a devotee and stay a devotee.
Because that's all that's left of Christmas. Nobody thinks about why Jesus came into this world. Nobody thinks of that: what's really true of Knowledge, why Jesus came as Guru Maharaj Ji for those devotees, revealed that Knowledge to them, gave them that experience - I mean, a wonderful experience. Nobody remembers that.
Divine Times, January/February 1980

Cancun, Mexico, January 16, 1980
All Guru Maharaj Ji … look, we can have a lot of doubts. We can have all these things. And yet, all Guru Maharaj Ji wants us to have is that devotion for him. If there were that devotion from our hearts to Guru Maharaj Ji, then through that devotion he will fulfil us. From our devotion we fulfil Guru Maharaj Ji - what Guru Maharaj Ji wants: that love, that devotion. And through that devotion he fulfils us, what we want: that experience to be complete, to be one, not to be fragmented in different pieces.
But the true sincere love, that sincere love, that love that's not because of a reason, that devotion where that love is so sincere - so sincere that it changes its name from love to devotion. I cannot give my devotion to anything else in this world except to my Guru Maharaj Ji, because it's sincere. I cannot have an expectation. What can I expect? That's where I have to learn humility. That's why I have to be humble. I need not be humble anywhere else in this world but I need to be humble when I stand at my Guru Maharaj Ji's Feet. Because he has given me everything. I can expect things but I cannot expect anything from my Guru Maharaj Ji because he has given me everything. If I go expecting something from Guru Maharaj Ji, then I know I shall never get it. Because I have to be a devotee.

Nobody is saved. We have to be saved, yes. We can be saved, yes. And we should be saved, yes. We should find that Master, yes. Because Guru Maharaj Ji makes it so simple and we make it so sophisticated. Every single time the Master comes, open His arms and says, "Let me in. Let me in. You know, it reminds me of that song, you know, that the Lord becomes a beggar and
it goes in this, in front of this devotee's house and knocks on the, on the door and the song is just going, you know, saying, "Oh devotee, you know, your fortune is really come, your, your, your luck, your, your destiny is unfolding now. The Creator, the Giver of everything is at your door begging from you. From you." That has created, that sustains, that destroys, that holds this ultimate, this holds this universe in the palm of his hands has come to your door, do not refuse. Which Master didn't come to everyone of these human beings and come to me open up. Regardless of our confusion, regardless of our concepts. But anyway, you know, again, surrender, have that faith in Guru Maharaj Ji. What else you gonna do? Nothing. You have to have that faith in Guru Maharaj Ji, You have to have to have that surrender.

There has to be that devotion. Devotion is that basic, fundamental thing and Knowledge brings us that devotion and Guru Maharaj Ji can take that devotion. What is that devotion for?
That devotion is really for you because when you give that devotion to Guru Maharaj Ji, Guru Maharaj Ji takes that devotion and then makes it into that perfect love and gives it back to you,
gives it to every human being, you know, who has come, who has able to recognise that Grace.

Q: Guru Maharaj Ji do you give Knowledge sessions? A: Do I give Knowledge sessions? What do you mean by that? I sure, I go around giving Knowledge, yes.
Q: Guru Maharaj Ji I've uh been following and observing and somewhat experiencing the experience of other people who have been a part of what you're talking about and I tend to lose focus on one issue. I'd like you to answer for me if you would what is the purpose of worship and in what should be the focus of worship?

People have doubts, doubts and doubts. We know it's simpler and easier not to have doubts than to have doubts, all you got to do is open up, open up inside, let that light, let that experience shine through and the grace of Guru Maharaj Ji is with you. There's nothing you have to fear, there's nothing you have to be afraid of. Again and again, again and again I see that the Guru Maharaj Ji, Guru Maharaj Ji's grace manifests in ways exactly how I need it. If I have ideas about it, Murphy's waiting for me. If I surrender about it, Guru Maharaj Ji is waiting for me, I just have to beg and this is the way it's always been. …
You and me I wanna just be the same sparkle that I was when nothing existed because then I know I was completely content and my Creator gives me a body and yet he wants it to be that sparkle inside, that little thing in his eye which is complete, which is perfect. This is what I am, this is what I can be enjoying this life. Guru Maharaj Ji comes in this world, he doesn't say, "Okay guys, start being miserable, never, enjoy." Guru Maharaj Ji comes in this life, comes in this world, he puts smiles on peoples faces.

By putting all the other things aside and focus on the one way, you don't need to run anywhere else, the human being starts to run in that one direction where his Creator truly resides,
where his Creator truly resides, where his true bliss is there. He doesn't know what's in front of him, what's behind him, what's above him, what's below him, that person goes to that place,
he's in that place where everything is still, everything is beautiful and there's nothing else besides that bliss, besides that peace and the Master (Hindi: Guru Maharaj Ji) has opened that door,
opened that path for the person to go to that place. What a beautiful thing, what is the difference? Truly, for that person who has this Knowledge (Hindi: premie)
when he realizes that every step is so precious and he makes the effort to try and understand this, the world doesn't even try to understand this but people who have this knowledge
can try to make this effort, even a little bit of effort every single day that they want to fulfil their lives. Therefore the Saints and Masters have said "Blessed are those,
blessed are those whose focus is in that direction of where there is that truth, consciousness and bliss where there is that Supreme Bliss, where is that,
where there is that peace but also walk in the remembrance of that.
