Prem Rawat's The Journey Is The Destination video
This video contains footage of Prem Rawat answering questions which have been written down beforehand and even reading from Kabir. It contains some graphics presenting the questions and various interludes of running streams and a long bridge and quaint third world life. This video should be titled "The Video of Dorian Rawat."
A question is asked: "How will Knowledge benefit me more than the meditation I'm doing?" and he answers "I don't know, because I don't know what you're doing." He doesn't know what the people who meditate as he teaches do either. He may know what they do with their hands and fingers but has no insight into their "experience of meditation." He says his Knowledge doesn't benefit anyone, he has many times explcitly stated that. The practice of Knowledge benefits nobody except himself.
- Rawat is "not telling somebody how you should be" - he is telling you what you have to do i.e practice the three Pillars of Knowledge
- He retells the story of two frogs, one from as well and one from the ocean. The frog from the well cannot believe there can be something larger than the well. Ironically, it is the premies who live in their little Maharaji/Elan Vital bubble who are the frogs in the well.
- Knowledge "Comprises of four techniques to be able to go inside" You close your eyes holding your eyelids, you close your eyes and put your thumbs in your ears, you think about your breathing and you turn your tongue backwards though Maharaji has never spoken about Nectar in the West since 1983. You do not go inside any more than you go inside at any other time.
- Kabir says, "my Creator, does my meditation for me" - just relax, that idea had a brief vogue amongst premies which basically meant no meditation
So once again, we have this opportunity to listen and maybe let a few things reach the heart, reach deep down inside. Because in a way, you know, things sometimes tend to be so complex. Sometimes life appears to be very complex as well. And yet you know that there is a beautiful and incredible simplicity and that that's somewhere the rule. That's somewhere where it is a maybe it's buried. Maybe it's buried deep down. Maybe it's buried deep down in ideas and sometimes we have to peel our ideas but that's a very difficult process because to us, our ideas, our rules, our definitions, that's a very strong thing for human beings. It's not so easy for them to let go. This is the understanding that they have come to and they want to hang on to that understanding. They want to hang on to their idea. They want to hang on to what their little perception of their world is.
And it reminds me of a story. And the story is that one time there were two frogs and once by chance, they happened to meet. They started talking to each other and it so turned out to be that one frog used to live in the ocean and one frog used to live in this little well. So the frog from the well learned that the frog from the ocean was on a long journey and invited him to spend the night with him. So the evening time came and whatever, they dove into the well and they were down there. They were talking, having dinner, whatever. (laughter) And the frog from the well said, "So tell me more about your ocean. How big is your ocean?" And the frog from the ocean, being humble, said, "Oh, it's very big. It's huge." So the frog from the well got up from his chair and hopped around in a little circle and said, "Is your ocean this big?" And the frog from the ocean said, "No, it's bigger." And he looked at him and he made a bigger circle.
He hopped along in a bigger circle and said, "Is your ocean this big?" And he said, "No, it's bigger than that." And then he went along in a bigger circle until finally he had hopped all around the edges of his well and he finally, in total dismay, looked at the frog from the ocean and said, "Is your ocean this big?" And the frog from the ocean said, "No, it's bigger." At this, the frog from the well said, "It is not possible. This is not possible. You lie. You're not telling the truth. There is absolutely no way your ocean can be bigger than my well. I have traveled from little ponds to little ponds and my well is well bigger than those little dimples in the earth, those depressions on the earth. How can your ocean be bigger than my well?" Sometimes people come to Knowledge it's not any different than that.
What is Knowledge? Very simple. It is a way to be able to turn within. Everybody in this world has taught us how to turn from here to there. Knowledge is a way to turn from there to here. That's all it is. Comprises of four techniques to be able to go inside and enjoy what is within us.
This is not another box to be placed of what Knowledge is. Knowledge is about you. Because inside of you is a wonderful world. A world that is timeless. A world that is silent in its own way. A world that is still. A world that is real. A world that is magnificent and Knowledge is the bridge to that world, to that place inside.
What will you be receiving? You will be receiving, and I'm not trying to speak in parables. Like a mirror that allows you to see you. Have you ever noticed? How many people can you see? Right now, I can see everybody who's in this hall. Maybe not the whole face here and there, but I can see everybody in this hall. Really? No, there's one person missing. Because I'm not nobody, I'm somebody, right? So, there's one person missing. Me. I can see you, and I can see you, and I can see you, and I can see you, and I can see you, and I can see you, but I can't see me. And what will it take to see me? You can see me, but you can't see yourself. To see yourself, you need a mirror. These eyes are very capable. I've got good vision. Better than 20-20. Still sharp. I sometimes say, "Oh, look at that." People go "Where? It's over there, believe me, it's there, it's there." But, with all the capability, I cannot see myself. I need a mirror. A simple mirror that merely reflects. That's all it does. Reflects to me, me. Not something else, not someone else, but just me.
Knowledge is exactly the same. There are four tools, four techniques. They allow you to connect to something inside of you. That's what you receive. Okay, that may be a surprising answer. That's too simplistic, is it not? Well, what about the experience? Bingo, the experience is in you already. That neither needs to be reflected. It already exists. This is a bridge. The techniques are a bridge that take and put the direction inside. Very simple techniques. Very simple techniques. Nothing complicated, nothing sophisticated. Doable by all. Every Knowledge session, everybody's scared "Can I do this?" You know, when I give you, after it's over, it's like, "Well, that was really nice, simple." Yes. That's what you receive. That's all I can give you. That's all I can give you. The experience is already inside.
Q: Is Knowledge the only Path?
"Whatever you want to follow, follow. When you get it out of your system and you're clear what you really want, I'm here. OK? Knowledge isn't another medal, mm mm, Knowledge isn't an anaesthetic, Knowledge isn't Advil, Knowledge isn't any one of those things. People must come to Knowledge because they want to come to Knowledge. Just as simple as that. If there is going to be reasons, then they will not understand what Knowledge is all about. There can be no reasons.
It has to be a process in which a person feels the thirst and says, "I want my thirst quenched." So simple, so natural. You can huff and you can puff, but the sun won't rise any sooner than it will. You can scream and you can yell. You can dance and you can lie down. You can say your mantra, but the sun will rise when it will. How delicate is it? Well, let me tell you how delicate it is. Kabir's. Kabir says, "I don't chant any rosaries. I don't chant any mantras. I don't do any rosary. My mouth says nothing. My Lord, my Creator, does my meditation for me. And all I do is relax."
"So, it's very delicate indeed. Completely on automatic, by the way, it's happening right now as you sit there. Knowledge is very different, not a path to follow, I don't tell people. You know people used to always come to me: 'Should we be vegetarians?' 'If you wanna be.' 'Should we be non-vegetarians?' 'If you wanna be.'"
** There is no record of any such statement. Click here to see what Rawat actually said about vegetarianism.
You see? I don't. "Should we wear whites?" If you want to. "Should we wear greens?" If that's what you wanna do. Not a good color to wear, but go right ahead. No. "Should we have our head shaved?" If you so wish. "Long hair?" Well, if that suits you. You know, there's a saying "Whatever pleases you, plum tickles me to death. Whatever pleases you, plum tickles me to death." So, it's not a path. It's not a religion. It's not. It's not telling somebody how you should be.
Knowledge points you to the place where everyday life is taking place. We all think everyday, all the actions that we do is what everyday life is. Those are not everyday life. Those are occurrences because you are alive. Those things are made possible by the courtesy of life itself. No life, no golf. Wisdom, you know? No life, no dog, no car, no wife, no kids, nothing. Life, made possible by the courtesy of life itself. And Knowledge points to that.
Q: How does spirituality correlate to Knowledge?
"It doesn't. Ssssssssssspirit (audience laughter), Spirit. Knowledge is concrete, not ethereal. And don't mistake me, I mean I'm not saying these things but there is a difference. Knowledge is very grounded. Knowledge is not an explanation of anything. Knowledge isn't just an idea in the void, in the vastness. Knowledge is very real. If you have any idea about spirituality, you can experience Knowledge. And if you have no idea about spirituality, you can experience Knowledge. If you know about the spirit and you believe in it, you can experience Knowledge. If you don't know about the spirit but don't believe in it, I mean, any combination thereof will work fine. It's not spiritual."
Q: How will Knowledge benefit me more than the meditation I'm doing?
I don't know, because I don't know what you're doing.
Q: Should I stop meditating before I ask for Knowledge?
Well, once you're, you know, you've exhausted your meditation, then come and ask for Knowledge. I'm not trying to say, "Well, this is, you know, so exclusive," but what I'm trying to say is "Don't make a pudding of it. Don't make a hodgepodge of it." I know one thing. If you were eating dessert, ice cream, you finished your course, you're eating dessert, and somebody said, now would you like some pasta? You'd be like, "Well, just put the ice cream on the pasta. It's okay." (laughter) My answer to that might be, "Well, if you're hungry enough, you would do it. But not if you're an Italian." It doesn't matter how much, how hungry you were, you know you don't mix your pasta with an ice cream sauce. And the point I'm trying to make is just this. Knowledge takes you to a very different place. This is not a bunch of explanations, okay?
Q: People say, why do I need somebody to show me?
Well, even when a doctor gets a broken hand, what does he do? What do you think a doctor does? Fix it. (applause) No, goes to another doctor, fixed it. He cannot do it himself. Somebody, and then somebody who is willing to help, to hold the mirror up, to hold the mirror. That's what I offer to people. A way to be able to go inside. It's very simple. And what are my prerequisites? Listen. First, remove your own doubts. Get rid of your questions. And with patience, start to understand what is being said. Learn something for life. Come in here. And when you are ready, and when I am ready, most importantly, when I am ready, I will be happy to give you this Gift of Knowledge. Why is it called Knowledge? Because it is the know-how to go within you. That's why it's called Knowledge. Very simple.
And this is what I have been doing for a long time, and this is what I do, and this is what I like to do. To go everywhere, and I see the thirst in people. Wherever I go. And I'm amazed. I watch in awe as the magic unfolds itself, as the thirsty find their water. It's amazing. Thirsty have a way of finding water. It's mysterious, but they find it. And when they do, they quench their thirst. Be a part, be a part of your own existence. Be a part of this beautiful magic. It is so wonderful to get rid of that load of ideas and expectations, and to really accept the life the way it is. Because all our lives, people have placed so many ideas of who we are, who we should be, what we should be upon our shoulders. And maybe you do not see it, but I do. You're hunched back. Down. As you walk this path of life, you look only at the floor. You look only at the ground. And once in a while you hear somebody passing by of people who talk about the stars.
Well, remove that load, and you will see the stars as well. So, it's a wonderful, wonderful chance to take that step in this life. Because ultimately, one day, we all have to go and that's a fact. Maybe you don't think about it, you don't have to. This is one appointment you don't have to make. It has already been made for you. This appointment has already been made for you. It doesn't matter who you are. One day, everyone, everyone has to go. Then, what do you have? What do you have? Fill the bowl inside. Fill the bowl of the heart, and you can leave filled. Otherwise, as the saying goes, empty-handed you came, and empty-handed you will die. Fill. All you have done is try to fill your pockets. That's all you have done. Your pockets are not gonna go with you. There's only one pocket, the pocket of the heart. Fill that and when that heart is full, it doesn't matter where you go, it feels good. Then you don't have to have a little sticker, smile. You automatically smile. You smile not because somebody told a good joke. You smile not because you saw something pretty. You smile because you know. You smile because you understand, and there is no smile like the smile of understanding. Fill your hearts, fill that bowl, and enjoy this existence. Enjoy this life.

These graphics certainly provide a contrast to the footage of Prem Rawat above.
He was then only 36.
