Maharaji: Blue Mountains Contact 1988-11-10

It would be difficult to put this speech into context without understanding that nearly all the people at this event have been dedicated followers (premies) of 'Maharaji' for around 15 years. They have proved their absolute belief in Maharaji and his Knowledge because they have remained devoted despite living through the shocking events, 5 years prior, in which Maharaji overturned the lives they had been living, at his command. In many cases they had been living in celibacy and poverty in which all their wages/salaries/time and energy were dedicated to Maharaji.

There's not much to learn from the speech. He begins with a collection of baseless assertions:

A large part of the speech is an extended metaphor about the nonexistence of a lake or waterfall of fulfilment. Only at the end of a deep, dark cave full of the skeletons of those who searched for water before you is there water slowly dripping, one slow drop at a time, and you must lie down beneath the drip. It is a lifelong process. Actually that is a pretty good description of premie life except that all the people in the audience first followed (Guru) Maharaj Ji because he claimed there was a waterfall of fulfilment and an infinite lake of love. There is even a song sung before him, as he sat on His throne, about His waterfall of love singin' in our hearts, recorded in his honour for posterity.

Teach me Devotion

Ten years before these very same people heard or read Maharaji say:

"we have Knowledge, we have the source of peace. We couldn't be more fortunate. It's like they're in the middle of the desert where everybody's crying water, water, water and every one of us is sitting under a waterfall. How more fortunate can we be? Not only is there water there, but we're sitting right under it.

Maharaji: Blue Mountains Contact 1988-11-10

In November Maharaji returned for the Contact programmes held in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. The Sydney programme was held at the Fairmont Resort in the Blue Mountains. The following extract is from his opening address …

And yet, here we are. And we live in this world. My point is, I really care what you do, but unless you feel the beauty inside, you will never be beautiful. You never will be. Lipstick isn't going to make any difference. Sideburns aren't going to Make any difference. No, you have to feel beautiful inside. And when you do, you will be so beautiful, so beautiful, that that is the day you will realise your own beauty. You will feel beautiful. You will admire the beauty that has been given to you and maybe that's a small change, but its a significant change. And guess what? It's a real change.

The thirst. It doesn't matter what you drink. Till that thirst inside is fulfilled, you will always be thirsty. And that day. That day that the thirst inside them is filled, ummm, it will be so beautiful. It's that little new revolution.

That hunger. It doesn't matter what you eat, but till you are satisfied inside, it's not going to make any differencence - It doesn't matter what chefs come up with. It doesn't matter how good of a cook you are, but when you are hungry inside, no food will fill your hunger. No water will quench your thirst.

And unless you can feel the love inside, there is nobody in this universe who will be able to love you. But, when that place inside is filled, then it all falls into place. The struggle goes away. Because the struggle comes to emulate that which doesn't exist. That's when you are going against the stream. Nature has its wisdom. It really, really does. Time has its wisdom. And when we try to put our wisdom up to it, we come with our own interpretations. We look at our watches and we tell time. We look at our second hands and that's the speed of time. No. That's your speed. There is a saying. 'Humans say that time passes away. Time says it's the humans that pass away.' It's the little difference of interpretation.

I mean, all of us will go. Time will stay. It's you that's the variable. It's you. And to me, can you, in your life, just feel that thankfulness. Take that moment to stop. Pull back a little bit and say, 'Yes. Let me fill myself. Let me feel my completeness. Let me feel the charisma I have been endowed with'. And then all is in proportion.

And people say. 'Well, that's … that's being unrealistic. Not to me. There's an example I gave in Melbourne. I gave this in the Aspirant Programme and I'll give it to you here as well.

And it's like this. You're in the desert and it's dry. And you're thirsty. Boy, you are thirsty. You know, your lips are chafed and your throat is dry, your mouth is dry. You're dry. And you are thirsty and you want water and all you're looking for is water. I mean, if a really nice lady happens to walk by in a bikini, you're not going to say, 'How about a date?' You're going to say, 'You got some water?' You know, I mean, it's like that's your state of mind. You care. If a Rolls Royce happens to go by, it's not like, 'Can I have a ride in it, please?' It's, 'Got some water? I need some water'.

And there you are, and you are looking and you jump. I mean, you run to things and you see these incredible mirages. And every time this happens, of course, there is a disappointment. And yet, you are still looking. And then, you start walking up this hill and you feel the moisture. I mean, you just feel the little bit of dampness in the soil and it's like, 'Wow. There is something here. There is water around.'

And you go up. And you go and you climb and you climb and you climb and you come to this cave. And sure enough, you can smell the water. It's like, its there. The humidity, you can feel. And you go in a little bit more and you go in it a little hit more and you go in it a little bit more; you go inside the cave and it's like - sure enough, now, you know, you are starting to see things are wet.

And in the back of the cave, there it is. There is water.

The water you've been looking for is there. But it's just one drop at a time. No fountain. No waterfalls. No rivers. No ponds. No wells. Just one drop at a time. Drip. Drip. Drip. Drip. That's all there is.

And what do you do? I mean, sure, when you were thirsty, your imagination said, 'And then there will be a pond with a fountain. And I will jump inside this pond and the water will surround me and I'll drink and I'll, you know, choke on it and that will feel good'. But there is no fountain. 'Oh, there will be a waterfall and I'll put my head underneath it and the water will just gush into my throat and it'll fill me.' But there's no waterfall. It's just one drop at a time.

And believe me, there's enough water there to fill you many times over, but it's only coming one drop at a time. And there's only one thing you realise you can do. It's just to lie there. Put your face up and lie there. And let it fall on your lips and let it go in your mouth and guess what? All, just one drop at a time. And it'll fill you and right away - I mean, right away as that first drop falls on you, there'll be relief.

And to many people, it's like, 'Well, I think I'll go look for a waterfall'. You know, and you can see it's like a little ways away, there's a big heap of skeletons, or something.

But, for those who can just lie there and open their mouth and let it just happen. You are not going to run out of the cave and scream, 'Hallelujah, I found the drop.' You know? I mean, it was going I to be 'I found the lake.' 'I found the waterfall', that's what you were rigged for. You know what I mean? And there are not too many people in this world who would run out of that cave screaming, 'I found the drop, I found the drop.' But is just that way. It will fill you, no question about it.

And it will be sweet. And it's sweet and its cool and it's beautiful and it's wonderful and it's incredible, but - one drop at a time.

And that's the way Knowledge is. That's the way fulfilment happens in this life. People look for the big waterfall of fulfilment. No. There is no big waterfall of fulfilment. Big pond and big lake? No, there are none. Just drop by drop by drop by drop. And if you have the patience and, indeed, the courage, the wisdom, the surrender that it takes to lie under that drop and let it fill you - and yes, you will be filled. Beyond your imagination. And, indeed, it's a surprise. 'That filled me?' Yes. And each one - each drop more satisfying that the other as it falls upon you.

And to me, that's the way Knowledge is. That's the way this life is. And we need to be wise. We need to wake up. We need to see. We need to feel. We need to prioritise. We need to have the distinctions. We need to be able to say, 'Yes, this is what's real for me'. Because Knowledge is so real.

To see these people transformed. For they have touched it, they have felt it, they have smelt it, the moisture. It's like that moisture. They walked upon the hill, they walked into the cave and it's like they hear a waterfall, but they can smell it. They can smell the moisture.

That's the same gift you have. And you need to understand. You need to see. You need to feel it. And the rest all falls into place. Because the priority has been taken care of. If the priority is not taken care of - everything is vulnerable. But, the priority has been taken care of. And that fulfilment, believe me is a priority.

Anyway it's just really beautiful to give Knowledge a chance A real chance. A genuine chance. And remember that Knowledge is a lifelong process. It doesn't just begin and end. Feel what its all about. Feel that feeling, fill that cup. And it's so much a more beautiful process.
