Maharaji: North American Organizers Conference, Miami 8th July, 1986
His speeches were not written or prepared but they are certainly not unrehearsed. The speeches preceding his current one are the rehearsals and his speeches following evolve gradually using the same store of tales, premie gossip, clichés, life events, recent tv shows, stock phrases and buzzwords.
THE NEED TO SYNCHRONIZE
On July 7 and 8, over 200 people from 22 cities attended the North American Organizers Conference in Miami. The purpose of the conference was to provide information about Maharaji's work so that maximum synchronization among North American participants could take place. Maharaji opened the conference with the following remarks:
I'm really glad all of you have come here to pull together your understanding and be a resource.
This past North American tour was really good because it got down to the crux of something. So many changes have taken place over the years that I'm not sure if people have always understood what was going on. With all the changes, people didn't always know how to respond or how to be effective.
The whole thing really comes down to something essential - what are our priorities? The way I see it - people need to be synchronized. It's very easy for people to get caught in their own ideas and start something rolling. But that something will eventually end.
These days, I'm seeing something incredible taking place in terms of inspiration. I see a unanimous synchronization taking place across the board - a synchronization of what we want to do and why we want to do it. This synchronization is not a hierarchy or just a manifestation of a few people's dreams. It's something else. But we need more than synchronization. We need commitment too.
Commitment is the thing that will take us through the hard times. Usually the first question we ask when hard times hit is, "Why am I doing this?" Well, why are we here? Do we feel something in ourselves that really wants to be doing this? Has the experience of Knowledge brought us to a point where we are feeling trust? Have we been able to go beyond our ideas? Or is this whole thing just a big ball rolling that we want to join?
Many times I see people making excuses. People come to me and say "I didn't know" or the ever popular "I didn't know that was supposed to happen." it's at that time you have to step back and say, "Wait a minute, who's responsibility is it to find out if I don't know?" Are you going to sit there for the rest of your life waiting for someone to feed you the missing piece of information? That's the time to get on the phone and find out - what to do and how to do it.
Today and tomorrow a lot of specifics will be talked about. But the first thing we have to do is get on a solid foundation. We have to discover the methods that will yield nothing but good, positive, solid results one after the other.
I have dreams. I have ideas. And I would like to see these ideas come about. I also want to come to your cities. But so many things have to happen first. That's why we're setting up channels that can provide you with timely, accurate, and valuable information. Yes, we are rebuilding something. But we're building without building. We're building something in our own hearts. We're building something that is invisible. It's a question of putting the puzzle together in the right way.
When someone says to me that it can't be done, I just look at them. "What do you mean it can't be done?" Go ahead and ask me the question "How are we going to do it?" But don't tell me it can't be done. You have every right to ask the question, "How are we going to do it?" But there's a big difference between "it can't be done" and "How are we going to do it?" How we are going to do it, obviously, is by saying, "Let's go. Let's talk about it. Let's do it." The statement "It can't be done" simply tells me that a person doesn't want to be a part of it.
In the past, our motto was "Let's be spontaneous." It sounded so good to "be spontaneous," but it didn't always work out so well. Personally, I'd rather use my spontaneity for life because life is going to require me to be spontaneous. So get your homework done right.
I know it's hard for organizers not to end up with the feeling of being "doers." But don't. Things will happen a lot easier. When there's this compelling thing saying,"I gotta do, I gotta do, I gotta do," it really becomes tough. Remember, you have to be able to "STOP." "S" is for "step back." "T" is for "think." "O" is for "organize." And "P" is for "proceed."
If you have questions, get them answered. It's your responsibility. You have a right to have questions. It shows that your commitment and dedication is very clear. Usually, we feel that if we ask too many questions then somebody is going to question us. But really what you have done is pointed to the other person and said, "You haven't done your homework. You've given me delegation without communication."
If we decide to get organized and decide that it's not going to become a monster, then, by God, it's not going to become a monster. In the 70's we weren't so sure. We were trying to be impressive and impressive we were. That came from not having confidence in Knowledge. When people don't have confidence in Knowledge, amazing things happen. They put up a front and try to look slick. I don't want to go that route.
Let's really fly. Of course there are difficulties. Let's overcome them. I know I can pull rank on you. But I don't, do I? Because things need to be done on the basis of clarity rather than "do it." There really is no such thing as a small community. If there is, let's increase it. There's no such thing as a remote community. If there is, let's unremote it. It's as simple as that. It takes work. It takes clarity. It takes homework, too, for us to proceed with what we need to do. So let's prepare.
We're building something in our own hearts. We're building something that is invisible."
