Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

One time, Guru Maharaj Ji asked some premies, "Do you know what God-realization is?" When no one really answered, He replied, "God-realization is the acceptance of the superior power."

When we become conscious of that superior power within us, directing and guiding us, then we are beginning to understand the Knowledge which Guru Maharaj Ji has revealed. And by being in tune with this power and allowing it to direct our lives we will have what we always wanted – love, peace, harmony, and a sense of purpose in our lives.

In order to understand and experience this power, we must follow the directions which Guru Maharaj Ji has given us; a simple method of practice which allows us to grow and unfold naturally in our inner awareness.

This simple method is a life of satsang, service and meditation, as well as being attentive to the five commandments of Guru Maharaj Ji. Only through practicing this formula in a balanced and dedicated • manner can we hope to experience the wealth of love and beauty which this Knowledge holds for us.

This booklet aims to give you some guidelines which can help you to experience Knowledge. We have already been given the perfect formula. Now we must simply practice this formula, arranging our lives so that we give Knowledge a chance to grow and develop.

Chapter 2

DOING MEDITATION

Its Practice

"What is meditation? Perfect concentration upon a perfect thing is called meditation. Just remember that."

- Guru Maharaj Ji

Meditation on the Knowledge which Guru Maharaj Ji reveals is the most fundamental activity of our lives; we strive to make it the center of our concentration twenty-four hours a day. Because we can do all our actions while in meditation, it doesn't detract from our duties. Rather, by keeping us conscious of that perfect life inside of us, all of our actions become geared toward the expression of that perfection.

Because meditation is a continuous thing, it takes much effort to remember to meditate. It may be initially difficult, because we have accumulated habits of mental laziness whereby our mind rambles and remains uncentered. We may dwell for a moment on one thing, and the next moment on something else. But the aim in meditation is to bring our mental energies to one point, to that perfect point which has been revealed to us.

As we practice meditation in our day to day lives, we see that it helps us to find clarity in our thoughts, and to direct them usefully. So, meditation becomes the most practical tool we can have, and the constant application of meditation is the most important thing to do.

Approaching Meditation

Constant meditation is an internal experience, and can be done wherever you are. But there are also times during the day when seated meditation is necessary. When you have a time in which your only activity is the activity of meditation, it helps to strengthen your meditation for the rest of the day.

Approaching these times with a positive attitude will make things a lot easier. Approaching seated meditation without expectation, and accepting whatever experience you may have with love and good humor, allows us to make the long term effort which is needed to

6

DOING MEDITATION

sustain the experience of Knowledge.

A Meditation Posture

Generally, you should always try to sit as straight as possible when meditating. The head should be unsupported because if you rest your head, you are more likely to fall asleep when you are supposed to be meditating. Another point to remember is that by staying as immobile as possible, it is easier to concentrate inside.

Because we are aware of our body mostly due to our movements, if we can hold the body immobile long enough, our consciousness of it disappears, and our concentration remains in Light, Word, Music or Nectar rather than our limbs.

A balanced alignment of our body really promotes an even flow of energy in meditation. Do the best position your age and muscle tone will support, but don't worry at your lack of achieving a "full lotus" position. Remember, it is not body contortions which bring us peace.

A Meditation Time

Meditating regularly and getting into the flow of the meditation means working a new habit into your daily schedule. The regularity of your sitting down to meditate is as important as the amount of time you spend in meditation. (Two hours every day is worth more than twelve hours every two weeks.)

It is a good idea to have some satsang about your new schedule (including meditation) with your family members or others around you who may not understand, so that time for meditation, satsang and service will be respected and understood.

When setting your meditation schedule, set simple, possible standards for yourself. Don't try to get up at four, take a cold shower, fall asleep at work, and then think meditation is impossible. The ashram schedule (found on page 20 of this booklet) is designed to facilitate a life of satsang, service and meditation. You may want to adapt it to your needs.

The best times for meditation are actually the "quiet" hours, i.e. sunrise, sunset, late night; but you may have other times which would be better, according to your own biological clock.

Sit as long as possible, but don't worry about how long you sit. Effort is the key. Don't feel that you are fighting a losing battle with your mind. But put as much effort and time into meditation as you possibly can. If your mind becomes agitated and constantly pulls you out of meditation, "ride" it out as long as possible; take a break, and start

7

LIFE WITH KNOWLEDGE

again if you have time.

Meditation Tools

Exercise, good foods, fresh clothing, and a good shower before meditating are ways to make you feel better and brighten your outlook. This positive feeling can help in inspiring you to really "get into" meditation. Try not to eat too heavily before meditation as it takes energy which would be focused in meditation and uses it for digestion instead.

Also, there are certain items which can be used to help your meditation, by providing a good environment. The seat for meditation should be one of the most comfortable seats in the house, in a place which is quiet. Good cushions, or a straight backed chair, can make you more comfortable.

Use of a baragon while doing Light and Music techniques, gives you the support you need, so that you can give time and attention to the practice of these techniques. Earplugs for screening out unnecessary sounds; use of a soft, light comfortable covering or shawl; having a picture of Guru Maharaj Ji, are all things which can help you to center on meditation. At least when these physical considerations are taken care of, you can't find an excuse on the physical level as to why you can't concentrate.

8

Chapter 3

ATTENDING TO SATSANG

The Importance of Satsang

"And if our hearts are full of all the confusions, all of the craziness of this world – of course they've got to be because there is nothing that has really been put there to take them out when we hear this thing called satsang, which means company of Truth and which just means talking about the factual thing, talking about that Truth, this is what it's called … we hear more and more and more about the Knowledge, the more our confusion and craziness is cleared away."

- Guru Maharaj Ji

The importance and power of satsang cannot be overestimated. Maharaj Ji tells us to "Never delay in attending satsang", and He is not only talking about the satsang which is held at programs. Satsang can happen anywhere, when we speak of the Knowledge. As long as we are one-pointed in our satsang, always focusing on truth, then we will experience it as satsang. We should always be open inside ourselves to allow satsang to penetrate, realizing that this experience of satsang can do nothing but cause us to love, and increase our clarity.

Being Attentive and Open

Developing a love for listening to satsang and giving satsang is an art. And, like any art, the art of satsang needs practice. It means constant effort so that we can really understand its importance. To really listen to satsang, to really hear and experience it, we must be open, humble, and attentive – to let satsang calm our minds and envelop our hearts. Being in satsang is being in Truth, and it should be a consciousness that grows within us, just as we grow to realize the consciousness behind service or meditation.

Consistency in Attending Satsang

We never "outgrow" our need for satsang. Satsang is not a set of concepts or explanations which can be memorized. It is an experience

9

LIFE WITH KNOWLEDGE

whereby love is shared and the energy of life communicated between human beings. It is the experience of that thing behind the words being spoken, rendering the words themselves less important than the vibration inspiring those words. And this inspiration is always needed to inspire constant meditation.

Also, sometimes we will not "feel like" attending satsang, feeling too tired, or bored, or that we have too many other things to do. This is the time that satsang is most important, because it is just the subtlety of the mind persuading us to stay away from that thing which inspires us and diminishes the power of the mind in our lives.

It is not always necessary to be "inspired" to go to satsang, because satsang itself is the thing which inspires us to greater dedication and effort. Giving satsang, as well as listening to it, is also vitally important as we experience that energy being expressed through our own selves.

10

Chapter 4

DOING SERVICE

Meditation in Action

"So realize that first of all your destination, your aim, is to receive this Knowledge, but now once you have received it, your aim should be to meditate upon it. And now, because you are always meditating also, now your aim should be to do satsang and service. Because no service no servant; no servant no humbleness; no humbleness not a man. And not a man not a disciple. So you cannot be a disciple at you want to be a disciple at all. If you want to be a real human being, first of all you hare to be a servant. And how can one become a servant? By service."

- Guru Maharaj Ji

Everything you do can be service if you understand that it is service to Guru Maharaj Ji. Service is action performed while meditating, actions performed in the consciousness of Truth and in the consciousness of who we are serving Actions which arc performed without love, without the understanding and dedication which comes from meditation, are not the actions of the servant. Because the essence of service is consciousness, our true service is spreading love.

Divine Light Mission is a Vehicle for Service

"My mission in this world is to establish peace, but I need the cooperation of all. We are very, very fortunate to have received this Knowledge. and now it is our duty to spread it throughout the world. The way in which to do this is through Divine Light Mission because Divine Light Mission is the mission that has been created for the purpose of spreading this Knowledge."

- Guru Maharaj Ji

11

LIFE WITH KNOWLEDGE

more direct connection with service to Guru Maharaj Ji. It is to fulfill the need for service that Divine Light Mission was created. Serving the Perfect Master, channeling all the energy we gain from meditation back into meaningful work to help this world, is a privilege which cannot be understood or realized quickly. It, like everything else, takes time and practice.

Divine Light Mission is not an organization separate from premies. It is the premies who make it what it is, and its effectiveness is always a reflection of the clarity and dedication of the premies.

Our Real Service – Propagation

Propagation is being done wherever there is a premie who is communicating his or her experience to others, through satsang. Since sat-sang means being in the "company of truth," it is not only our words, but also our actions that communicate this experience of Knowledge. And only a strong base in meditation can communicate this truth. Guru Maharaj Ji said once that if every premie brought just one other person to Knowledge over the course of a year, propagation would really take off. So, your role in an overall propagation effort is actually very simple, and down to earth. You don't need to be part of a large community, or have plans to blanket a city with thousands of leaflets and posters, to propagate this Knowledge. The only requirement is that you share your experiences in the most natural way, and in a way which is complementary to the situation you are in. Whether it is because you are an "example" to your co-workers which initiates a person's interest, or it is because you are verbally giving satsang, from the very start, your being in meditation will eventually do the trick, and enable Guru Maharaj Ji to work through you to bring others to a life of meditation, satsang, and service.

Doing Propagation Through Divine Light Mission

The following is a letter which Guru Maharaj Ji sent out, specifying in what manner he wants our propagation efforts to proceed:

Dear Premies:

To facilitate the proper growth and expansion of Divine Light Mission in America, it is necessary that all those wishing to do service in spreading Knowledge have channels of communication through which direction can be given so that we all can work together. Therefore, everyone arranging any activities in either my name or in the name of Divine Light Mission must contact Headquarters by telegram, telephone, or telex, for approval of any proposed activity such as

12

DOING SERVICE

arranging any big programs, satsang tours, contacting public officials, etc.

By establishing this communication, all activities can be approved and supported by the Divine Light Mission, and any special proposals will be able to come to my attention for approval before implementation. In this way, everyone will have the opportunity to cooperate in doing service of spreading Knowledge with maximum effectiveness under my direction. Now is your opportunity to work really hard to establish peace in the world.

Blessings to you all.

Sant Ji Maharaj

If you feel you would like to take a more active role in propagation other than word of mouth type of satsang to friends, associates, etc., and there is no Divine Light Mission ashram or center already established in your area, you should write to:

Communication Department
International Headquarters
Divine Light Mission
P.O. Box 532
Denver, Colorado 80201

You will then receive direction on how to proceed.

13

Chapter 5

THE FIVE COMMANDMENTS

1. Do not put off until tomorrow what you can do today.

2. Constantly meditate and remember Holy Name.

3. Leave no room for doubt in your mind.

4. Always have faith in God.

5. Never delay in attending satsang.

The five commandments of Guru Maharaj Ji arc simple guidelines for living. At first, they are almost deceptively simple, just like the techniques of meditation or the path of service, satsang and meditation may seem to be when we first begin their practice. But these commandments are all-encompassing with a depth of meaning that increases more and more as we experience and understand Knowledge more and more.

By following these commandments, our whole lives will become one-pointed, aimed at Truth and maximizing our experience of love and happiness. You will ultimately have to realize the importance of these commandments for yourself, but this will happen, again, only with practice.

14

Chapter 6

AGYA

"You were told about this word, and explained its meaning thousands and thousands of times. And the word is 'agya'. If you follow agya, there is no big deal, no big problem. Then you don't have to worry. It's like, you're told to do something and you do it! … It's like Guru Maharaj Ji is standing a hundred feet above you and saying. 'Listen. You want to get out of this place? Okay. Now make a left.' And you go, 'I don't need your advice."

"But if a person can be that humble and really understand that, 'Yes. I am a little child, and I need directions.' then everything will be so beautiful."

- Guru Maharaj Ji

Often, after receiving Knowledge, we hear about the importance of Guru Maharaj Ji's "agya." Guru Maharaj Ji's "agya" is His command to His disciple. A true disciple always obeys the agya of his Master. Receiving the command of our Master is a great gift, for He is the guide who will elevate us to a place of clarity and peace. The five commandments are really Guru Maharaj Ji's basic and most fundamental agya for us. They are His commands to us, and they should be obeyed as willingly and without hesitation as we might run to get Him a glass of water if He was visiting our home. His agya is our guidepost along the path, and these commandments, if followed, will not fail us.

Without doubt, our experiences of pain and confusion in this life will not end altogether after receiving Knowledge. But when feeling either pain or confusion, just try one thing. Really look at yourself and see if you have been obeying Maharaj agya. If there has been less than consistant or sincere effort, just renew your determination to obey Maharaj Ji's commandments and really get into satsang, service, and meditation. You may find that, sooner than you thought possible, you are again experiencing that love and peace which inspired you to receive Knowledge in the beginning.

15

Chapter 7

LIFESTYLE

A Universal Way of Life

One of the most significant characteristics of the experience of Knowledge is that it is universal. This means that it can be experienced and realized by every human being, regardless of age, body, culture or lifestyle.

Maharaj Ji prescribes a life of service, satsang and meditation, with obedience to the five commandments. However, practicing service, satsang and meditation is really a matter of consciousness which grows out of meditation and not necessarily from a particular living arrangement. Family members, single apartment dwellers, young and old people alike, can lead a life of service, satsang and meditation very successfully and experience the peace and love of this Knowledge continually. It is not necessary to attempt to change the circumstances of your life immediately after receiving Knowledge because you feel that in order to realize it you must begin renouncing your past habits and possessions. Just by meditating more and more you will understand your own life, and how to live it with Knowledge.

The Active Membership Program

The Active Membership Program is a really practical way to incorporate the dedication needed to practice a lifestyle of service, satsang and meditation into our lives, regardless of our living situation. This program makes dedication into a real, practical flow. With AMP, the consciousness of directing our efforts in service is made much more clear as we give our support to the programs of Divine Light Mission. Habits

"Whatever you sow, you reap. If you sow good, you shall reap

16

LIFESTYLE

"good. If you sow bad, you shall reap bad.

- Guru Maharaj Ji

It's a good idea to: make a habit of love; make a habit of service, satsang and meditation; make a habit of obeying the Five Commandments.

On being vegetarian:

"If you eat meat you will find you get more angry and impatient, and that is harmful to you. I have heard there was a time when saints told people to eat meat, but at that time there was no other food. Today we have got plenty of food so there is no need to kill animals. How many animals are being killed because we eat them? Very many.

- Guru Maharaj Ji

On the use of drugs and alcohol:

"Well, the only thing I can tell you is that, look, you already have a Knowledge that is much more superior than that. It is like this: a person is in one city and he is telling everybody, 'Oh, I want to go to another city as soon as possible.' And he has a falcon jet which is A-OK. It runs; it's perfect. But all he does is take his suitcase and start walking. And that's not the quickest way. It's not good to just say, 'Oh, I want this enlightenment to be soon as possible, and then instead, going to something that is completely inferior."

- Guru Maharaj Ji

On marriage:

"What people do is they say, okay, we have to get married now, and then they get married. After some time they think oh no, I don't think I like this thing. I think I better get back to do service. And they leave their wives and they come back and it's like, they want to do service again, and they're really confused and I say, 'Man, do one thing. Make your decision whether you want to get

17

LIFE WITH KNOWLEDGE

married and stay married. You understand. Don't get divorced in two weeks because that is the most terrible thing you can do."

- Guru Maharaj Ji

Knowledge is the most natural thing. It is life itself and therefore is not incompatible with any particular way of life. Maharaj Ji has recommended certain habits for us to adopt, simply because they contribute to our own efforts to become one-pointed. Adopting and strictly adhering to these habits, however, does not constitute purity or God-realization. These are all internal qualities and you will find that everything you need to help you grow will come to you naturally, through practicing satsang, service, and meditation.

A Proverb From Guru Maharaj Ji as Told by a Premie

In Italy, before Copenhagen, Maharaj Ji had a dream one night … It was really beautiful. He said that, "in this dream I made up a proverb." And it was so beautiful, I'd like to tell you that proverb now.

Guru Maharaj Ji said that that which comes into the heart softly and lovingly, that is what not to think about. But that which comes into the heart quickly and hard, that is what to think about before taking action. So try to understand, try to understand this thing, that things come into your heart - if it's on impulse, if it's just like 'Wow! I gotta do this, and I just feel like this is Guru Maharaj Ji's Grace and this is what I should do and this is right!' - be careful. Beware. This is what you should think about. That is what you should put some question to. But that which comes in slowly, softly, that which nurtures in the heart, that which comes through meditation, and through time and patience, that is what we never have to think about. That is always correct. Now, how are we going to know if it's coming in that way or not? Through meditation, that's the only way. That's the only way we can understand anything without our minds.

What About Good and Bad, or Right and Wrong?

The subject of good and bad is a very controversial subject. How can we really tell what is right and wrong for us? In general, there's one definition that has been described, which is a useful guideline to follow when these matters come up. As it was written in the Vedas, one set of Hindu scriptures: "Good is that which promotes the growth of the soul. And bad is that which demotes, not only doesn't promote, but demotes the growth of the soul. Those things which promote the experience of Holy Name are always good for us. And anything that is

18

LIFESTYLE

not going to promote this growth, and furthermore demotes it, is not good for us. And that discrimination comes through meditation on Holy Name."

"Put Your Mind into This Knowledge,
Don't Put This Knowledge into Your Mind."

"Some premies might be at the point of just giving up, because nothing is fitting together for them - nothing at all. But remember - you've got a few more steps to go, and everything is going to start fitting together. When you dive in the ocean and touch the bottom, because you have got these big, huge flippers on, as soon as you touch the bottom, all the sand starts coming up. It's like a cloud almost. You can't see anything. At that point, you can say, 'Wait a minute. I can't see anything, so I'm goin' up!' And you can just go up, and that's it. But if you wait, just for a little while, and let the sand settle down, then it's so beautiful. Because the reason why you came, you can accomplish. But just because there was sand blowing out there, or a whole cloud of sand was formed, to just give up because of that is no good."

- Guru Maharaj Ji

Often as we go along in the Knowledge, we find ourselves trying to figure it out, and trying to figure out how we should really live our lives, e.g., "What occupation should I choose?"; "Should I play cards", etc. Or we try to understand what each of our experiences means, instead of just trying to remember Holy Name and dissolve our minds into the pure energy vibrating inside of us. This is a very subtle point, but you may find it useful to remember. Just practice meditation so that you can begin to experience the automatic unfolding of your life's events. Guru Maharaj Ji once compared trying to figure out this Knowledge with our minds as something like trying to put an elephant in a Volkswagen. Obviously, it doesn't work.

Being With Other Premies

Many people choose to live in premie houses, centers, ashrams or with other premies, just to have the support and inspiration that comes from associating with others who are committed to living their

19

LIFE WITH KNOWLEDGE

lives in meditation, satsang, and service.

Of course, the must obvious way to be with premies, if you live by yourself or with non-premies, is to attend satsang regularly and do service with other premies when you have the chance. But if you are desiring more satsang or support or just companionship from others in the practice of satsang, service and meditation, then living with other premies can be invaluable.

Our experiences on this path arc all very similar We receive Knowledge and as we meditate, it begins to grow and the. energy of Truth begins to fill us. In the process, however, we may experience a feeling that we are more confused or are feeling more pain than we felt before Knowledge. Living with other premies is a great help to see how the process we are going through is the same for every premie. Knowledge doesn't bring "instant eternal peace", but it brings the capacity for conscious growth and for sharing at every step. This is a great part of the joy of this path - just sharing our experiences, however blissful or difficult, with others. So, seeking out the company of others who practice Knowledge, and opening up to them with our experiences can be a big help in living our life in such a way that realization is really possible.

There are many communities where premies live and work. Always feel free to approach premies at any Divine Information Center, or DUO office about any questions you may have. We are here to help each other.

Schedule

A schedule is highly recommended to be regular in meditation and to establish regular satsang and service. To appreciate a regular schedule that provides a balance of medi tat ion, satsang, and service, we need only do it. The following is a suggested schedule (the ashram schedule) which provides a practical way to budget time so that all the aspects of Knowledge are kept in balance. You can make up your own schedule to fit your daily activities or life style.

LIFE WITH KNOWLEDGE

Arti

Arti, a devotional song or a love song, sung to the Perfect Master, is an expression of love. You may not use it every day, but still, it exists as one way of thanking Guru Maharaj Ji when His gift of Knowledge just naturally starts to manifest in your life. The lyrics for Arti are a part of the Knowledge session packet given to each premie at the time of learning the meditation techniques.

"So be perfect, be in love, do meditation, run smoothly, have a good life, enjoy yourselves, and be one with Him who has created you, and who will create you."

You are my mother, and You are my father,
You are my brother, and You are my friend,
You are riches, You are wisdom,
You are my All, my Lord, to me.
You are my All, You are my All,
You are my All, my Lord to me.

Guru Maharaj Ji, my life is within You,
From You I was born, and to You now I go.
Forever I'm Yours, my longing is endless,
This heart of mine aches to be One with You;
Forever I'm Yours, my longing is endless,
This heart of mine aches to be One with You.
Wherever I look, Your face is before me,
Your golden love melts all my troubles away.
I give You my heart, for in You it will mellow,
Maharaj Ji my Lord, my life is Your play;
I give You my heart, for in You it will mellow,
Maharaj Ji my Lord, my life is Your play.

Oh wondrous Lord, my Guru Maharaj Ji,
Your Grace is a river that flows on and on.
You fill my heart with Your love overflowing,
Please let me come home, find my rest at Your Feet;
You fill my heart with Your love overflowing,
Please let me come home, find my rest at Your Feet.
