Maharaji in Miami 2001-05-11 E58
Maharaji says: "This year in England, in Nottingham, the program is on the 17th, June 16th and 17th. That is, to the date, 30 years when I came to England."
Standing applause, shouts of Maharaji we love you
- He gets a bit worked up about what is real. "I'll tell you what is real!" He seems to be emulating Jack Nicholson's speech in the movie "A Few Good Men"
- Master? Guru?
Maharaji in Miami, May 11-12th 2001 E58

It's a beautiful chance to come together and talk about that which is so important, to have the opportunity to express a gratitude, because something is alive, something is so beautiful. Long time ago, my Master, my father, my guru, lit a candle, and that candle still burns, and still brings that light in that extremely dark place. Something has been replaced.
You know, one thing I was thinking about just yesterday, because it's been a little bit of a time to try to catch on to what's happening, being in Amaroo, and then after that going to Taiwan. It's been a very tiring experience, to try to get some R&R, to be able to go on with the next set of schedule, which is in Europe, which is also extremely busy. And all this, then is supposed to end up in India, with an extremely, extremely busy schedule.
And I was just thinking how, if you could imagine a street, and on this street, there are all these different houses, and they're all beautiful houses. And as you drive by, some are particularly beautiful, and you can see them. The lawns are manicured, the trees are trimmed, and it looks beautiful. Flowers are there, there's light, there's the garden to augment the house, and there's the house to augment the garden. And as you drive by, and you see another house, and there's all this junk that is growing. Bushes and shrubs, and you can't really see the house, and the paint is all peeling off. And it looks terrible. Then you drive a little bit more, and there's another house, and maybe it's starting to fall in neglect. Neglect. What does that mean, neglect? Who have we neglected the most?
We are aware of other people's presence. Somebody walks into our living room and sits down, we know about them, we can see them, we can feel them. It's like, oh, so-and-so is here. If somebody has been invited to dinner, there you are making preparations, cleaning the house, preparing the food, doing all these things so that you could make a good impression on them. Question. When was the last time you did that for you? Answer. Never. So, when was the last time that those preparations were made for you? When was the last time that the acceptance of this breath was actually paid attention to, like it should be?

You know, this world has tremendous amount of debates. This world has tremendous amount of opinions. What is good, what is bad, what is right, what is wrong? I find it the most confusing of all, because not one single person addresses the reality. If the sun is shining, it is shining. Go out and see for yourself if it is shining, and you will know. That is gone, vaporized. Let's talk about it. Is the sun really shining? Is the light really there? Be careful. Be careful. You may ride in a boat so that you can go across the river, but make sure your boat is sound, because if it isn't, it's not going to take you across the river. It'll dump you in the worst possible place you can imagine. Remember why you got in the boat? To go across. Pay attention. Pay heed, and make sure that the boat is sound, because otherwise, you're not going across. Our thoughts, our ideas, our arguments are like that, too. We have become, and slowly, maybe it's happening globally, that instead of realizing the fact, people want to talk about it. Instead of realizing the truth in their lives, people want to conquer it through their concepts. Let's have a debate. Let's talk about it. Let's read about it. What do you think? What do you think? Does God really exist? No, no, that's good. It's a healthy debate. There are some things that do not require a debate, and if you know the difference, you ought not to be debating.
There are certain things, such as a thirsty person wanting a debate, whether what he really needs is water or not. In the middle of the desert, he comes across a person, you know, and to me, it's like this joke, and I've told this joke before. There's this really, really thirsty person, and he's on his hands and knees, and he's crawling, and he's crawling, and he comes across this guy on a camel, and he says to the guy, he says, can I have some water, please? And the guy goes, well, how about a tie? And sure enough, he undoes his side pack, and it unfurls out, and there's all these neck ties in it. How about a tie? And the guy goes, no, no, I want a tie. Do you have any water? He says, well, how about a tie? And the guy goes, no, I want a tie. So he keeps crawling. He says, are you sure you can't tell me where there's some water? He says, oh, yeah, I can tell you where there's some water. Just go straight for about half a mile, and you'll come across an oasis, and there's water, plenty of water. And I said, that's what I want. So he goes there, he's crawling on his hands and knees, and he gets, and sure enough, there's this beautiful oasis, and there's this big guy standing there in the corner. The guy goes to him, he says, oh, can I have some water? The guy goes, well, are you wearing a tie? (laughter)
So much gets caught in debate. So much gets caught in speculation. So much gets caught in imagination. And so much is caught in concepts. Does reality have a chance? Does reality have a chance? What is real? I'll tell you what is real. The breath inside of you is real. This time that you have on the face of this earth is real. And the possibility that you can be fulfilled in this life, that is real. That you can have peace in this life, that is real.
And the rest, I'm not even going to say. People like it. Maharaji, be real, be practical. I am being practical. I'm being about as real as I can be. Because that on which you waste your time is non-recouperable. You will not get it back. You tell me of what action is it that you can possibly do in your life that will be there till your very last breath? I mean, let's face it. Do you really want to be fixing your computer's operating system as you take your last breath? Just use a little imagination. Do you really want to be downloading a bloody email as you take your last breath? Do you? Is that what you want? There's only one thing you can do. As the time comes, and different parts of the body begin to fail. Rosary? No. Mantraji? No. Fails. It begins to fail. Body starts to lose, surely, but slowly, its ability. Then there is only one thing left. To focus on this breath, you is the only thing you can do till the very last second, as it runs through you. Nothing else. You may not have the energy possibly to open your eyes and see who's standing around. You may not have the faculty of figuring out all the guests that are there watching you. I'm not making this up. So it is. This is what I was saying in Taiwan.
My father, when he left his body, it was very, very unique. Because he went in this room and he sat down and he started practice this gift of Knowledge. And it went on and it went on and people would peek in the room and go, Oh, he's still practicing and close the door. Then open the door again. Oh, he's still practicing. He's gone. He's gone. People open the door and they look. Oh, he's still practicing. And finally, it goes on for too long. And they say, well, something is wrong. There was another instructor in India. Same thing. He's sitting there. He's practicing. Oh, he's practicing. Oh, he's been practicing too long. Gone. Merged with that which the whole thing began.
That first breath of this air, this breath coming in and that first transition from blue to pink. That first transition when the body starts saying, okay, this blood coming from the umbilical cord now can start to slow down. This being, this baby, this little thing will be sustained. It has taken its breath. That's reality. It's a powerful reality. It is an incredible reality. The fact that you exist. When you look at a little baby, it is not graduated. It has no diploma. It has no career. It has no ideas. It has nothing. You can debate with this baby as much as you want. You think our economy will go up or will it go down? And the most logical answer you will get is when. When if it goes up, when if it goes down. Somebody will be whine. What will happen to this world? There are people there. You know, there are people who are ready for this whole world to end. And they're the people sit there and they make predictions on such and such day this world is going to end. You worried about end? What about what you got right now?

What about this breath? What about this time? What about this magic that is happening? This is magic. This is the magic. You are alive is the most incredible magic people say. Oh, yes. So and so can walk on water. Let me. Oh, wow. That's incredible. But so can a lizard. Would you really come to a hall like this to see a little lizard about this big? Would you? Claim to fame it can walk on water. About the two people that will show up who have never seen a lizard before. A lizard. Wow. Everybody will say, yeah, of course. I've seen those lizards. I've seen those and I've seen those on the Discovery Channel. I've seen those on the nature show. Wisdom galore.
So and so can take a rock and make honey out of it. Bees. They go buzzing along all day long. Find a flower. Take something out of it. Deposit the next thing you know. They've got honey. Would you really come here to see a bee? No. Miracle. What do people know about miracle when one is happening under their very noses? So the joy is in accepting this moment. The joy is in accepting this life. That is the greatest joy. Not on what's going to happen tomorrow. That is not joyful. What it is, what is joyful is when you say, I am going to accept what is happening to me right now.
This is real. This is the gift that I have been given. I have been given that house on that street and I do not want my house to be neglected. I'm gonna, I'm gonna trim. I'm gonna make it look beautiful. Because it is a gift that I have been given. The first thing I want to learn is how to accept. The most priceless things are raining down upon me. And I'm wondering what's going to happen in my life. Every second, more and more, every day, more and more. And here I am. And I am uncertain in the middle of the most certain ocean there is. How frail. How strange the situation is to be uncertain in the middle of certainty. To be in darkness. In the middle of the light. To be cold in the middle of the summer. To be thirsty in the middle of the beautiful freshwater pond. Dilemma? Yeah, that's a dilemma. And somebody comes along and says, oh, you know, by the way, it doesn't have to be like that. And the first reaction people have, oh, it's tricky. It's tricky. All your life, you thought things were a certain way. That's it. That's how it is. That's how the world is. That's how my dad told me. That's what my mother told me. That's what everybody told me.
You know, for me, many times my father would be giving his beautiful gift to people. Incredible generosity of talking to them about the possibility of this life. Amazing gift. And I remember I was very young. I'd get sleepy and I'd fall asleep listening to that. I'm sure that I heard his satsang, his speeches, when I was probably still in the womb. Very familiar voice. Him talking. Talking to the people about being alive. About accepting. About being in that place. And he would make these incredible claims, you know. Like one of the events I was talking about. You know, he was not, in those days, he didn't have to be politically correct. And he was not politically correct. He wasn't. He'd lay it on the line. He'd say, come to me. Come to me. And I can show you. I can show you. That joy, that peace within, inside of you. What a statement. What a statement.
Not, we're having a sale today. 25% on furniture. If you have been looking for furniture, come to us. We can sell you furniture for $25 less than anybody or your money back. No. Want a car? Come to Friendly Dan. We'll make you a deal you won't be able to refuse. This is the time to buy your new PC. Buy a new PC now and we'll give you the monitor free. Well, that's a good thing. Because without the monitor, the PC is really quite useless. That's like saying, you know, buy the keyboard and we'll give you the lettering on top of it free. And people are like, wow.

Mother's Day sale! Need a mother? I mean, you know, in India, they have all this. They celebrate mothers. Now maybe people wanting to be like Americans and so on may have started that tradition. But in India, you know, Mother's Day was not celebrated. You're my mother? Yes, I understand. So what? Everybody else has one too. No, you know, people are how they are. People celebrate birthdays in India either. They know when they were born. They really. You know, it's not like they're born, they're born. What day was it? Let's see. Yeah, you just go to the village and, you know, whatever date enough people say on the statistic, that must be the day you were born. What an incredible, incredible statement to make. Come to me and I'll give you peace. Come to me and I'll show you what you're looking for. Take it in, people. That's quite a statement. That is incredible. It's not, I'm going to fix your problems. They have that ad, you got too many debts, you know, and then they even tell you and if you have $8,000 debt, it'll take you 47 years to pay it off. Do you really want that? Consolidate your debts. Call this number. No.
Come to me and I can show you what you're looking for. In your heart, in your breath, in your life. To experience that joy, to experience that beauty. The very thing that is ageless. The very thing that is true and will continue to ring true in the heart of all mankind as long as mankind is going to be on the face of this earth. What does it mean to you and I when we hear those words? What does it mean? Wow. Wow. Can you really bring and light that candle of light in this darkness? Or do you go out and say, well, yeah, I have this concept and I have this idea and this idea and this is what I think peace is. So can you do that? No. Because I have to understand one thing. I know what I'm looking for. I had no clue what I was looking for. No clue. Already starting to formulate that thing, the big God with the white beard. Put me in touch with that. And something more precious. When can I become so pure as to receive this gift in earnest? Gift received in deception will not yield. Will not yield. Farmers know that. Which seed to plant in what season? Out of season, it's not going to happen. And people come. And people come with their ideas of what they think peace is and what they think truth is. And they get nothing. Nothing. And this is what people do. And this is how people miss that opportunity of a lifetime. When the focus is not on this breath, when the focus is not on this life, when the focus is not on that reality, then how is it?
I saw this man walking five or six dogs.I guess he must have been one of those guys, you know, takes all the dogs in the apartment for a walk. And there he is trying to hold back. And these big dogs, one going one way, one's going the other way, one's going the other way, one's going the other way. There he is trying to control the situation, which is totally out of control. Totally out of control. Something is running away, and he is trying to stop it from running away. He doesn't know how. Talk about being behind the power curve. Talk about being in that place. Oh, my God! Oh, my God! Things are happening, and I'm trying to cope with it. Things are happening, and I'm trying to stay on top of it. Oh, my God, help me. Help me. Help me. Make it right.
Make it better. Make it correct. Something has to happen. Something has to happen. Save me! That that has been given everything is yelling, save me? Something wrong in this picture? Something that has been given the most precious gift, holding the gift is going, save me? Because the focus is not in the right place. Neglect has come. People care. And when you care about the very thing that you will not get again, then what's left? Then this life becomes a desert. Then the call is not of the heart. Then the mind reigns supreme, and confusion comes like the rolling fog every day. You who live in the lighthouse, look for the light and search the horizon. Trying to look for the light, living in the lighthouse. That who has been given everything is looking for something more. The focus is not in the right place. The neglect has come. Simplicity has become complicated. Complicated has become the routine. The presence of someone else's breath is easier to take than the presence of one's own breath.
Another person's tranquility is easier to recognize than one's own tranquility. The search begins, but in the wrong place, because it's looking for it outside that which always was on the inside. Searching? Wanting to know that which you have never forgotten? Wanting to reunite that which isn't lost? Trying to find that which always was and is within you? Where do you look? Where do you begin? Where do you search? Without this breath, the bones move. Without this breath, nobody wants to look at you. Not even your best friends. Get them out of here.
So it is. This is your time. And those of you who have the gift of Knowledge, embrace it with your heart. Do it. Those of you who are waiting to receive Knowledge, also embrace it with your heart, because that's the only way you're going to get it. And those of you who have it, embrace this with your heart, because that's the only way you're going to keep it. Otherwise, like a delicate bird, this opportunity will fly away. Then, all those things that you think are important, you will still have. All those things that you think are important, you will still have. The ring will be there, but the diamond will be missing. The lake bed will be there, but the water will be missing. The scar of the water having been flowed will be there, but the river will run no more. It's not a tragedy. This is about a very joyful, happy story. This is about a joyful, happy life in which fulfillment happened, in which joy was embraced, in which consciousness was embraced, in which the breath was embraced, in which the truest, truest love was embraced, and this life thus was fulfilled.

That is the ultimate, ultimate story, and that's the story the Master makes true. You see, that's the difference. And that human being lived happily ever after. He doesn't just tell the story. That's what a lot of people are used to, somebody just coming out and saying things. He doesn't just say things. He makes them true. Yes, in this story, it is not just vocabulary, but the water does run through, and it becomes a river again, and you can bathe in it. And it's not just a dry lake bed, but there's water in it, and now you can call it a lake, and you can swim in it, and you can bathe in it, and you can be purified. And it isn't complicated. There is Knowledge. There is that simplicity. Darkness, but there is light. Confusion, but there is clarity. You see, what is being said is there is no need for the darkness when there is light. And you try to draw a comparison between the two, because you know what? Darkness really doesn't know about the light, and the light has no clue there is darkness. try to draw a comparison between the confusion and clarity. You know why? Because Miss Clarity has no idea that there is Miss Confusion. And Miss Confusion has no idea that such a thing as clarity exists. Embrace what you want in your life. That's your choice. That's your choice. Should you decide, should you decide to make in your life possible the reality of being fulfilled, then come to me. I can help. I cannot push you, and I cannot make you take the steps, but should you decide to walk, I can show you the path. I cannot make you practice this Knowledge. I can't. But I can show you how to go inside and be in touch with that divinity that is inside of you. This much I can do. You know, all around the world, with so much enthusiasm, this Knowledge is spreading.
Possibilities, it always feels like we've just begun. Just begun. So many people, so many people who had to wait so long to receive Knowledge, slowly that wait is no longer going to be necessary. So many people who are in such remote places where it was impossible for me to go, I can still go without me going. Knowledge sessions can happen there too. So far we have Knowledge sessions in Hindi, in Nepalese, in English, in Spanish, in Italian, in my voice. And as soon as I get some more opportunity, I like to do a few more. I have to keep doing that. So, simple. It is incumbent upon every person to make that effort to help, to help whoever is taking the responsibility for spreading Knowledge. I mean, I'm talking about the Master. I'm talking about that person. You know, it doesn't matter what you call that person. It really doesn't. I mean, my goodness, that's one person that has been called with too many names. In India, it's very simple because there are already too many names. So pick one. In the West, it's a little bit different. You know, English language. And there are people, you know, should we call them Master? You know, somebody said, well, you shouldn't be called Master. Master has the wrong connotation. So what do you call? Well, somebody actually said guru. Guru is perfect. Guru is very hip now. Everybody wants to be a guru. Guru of this and a guru of that. And he's definitely the guru of computers.
That which is always in darkness. I mean, just think about this. I asked somebody, I said, you're putting all this information on the hard disk. If you were to weigh the hard disk, you think it'd be heavier? No. Because information that you're putting in that hard disk is not really there. You think it's there. All you have done is just rearranged that which was already there. The I's and O's have been rearranged. You can put Mahabharata, which is a huge book and weighs a lot, into a hard disk, and it won't weigh an ounce more. A computer, a human effort. A human effort to have that done, which other people cannot do. They used to have these computers the size of a railway station. And it could do multiplication. It had big valves and stuff like that. And in fact, that's where the word bug comes from. Because the bugs would get stuck inside the valves and stuff like that, and the thing would stop working. And the engineers would have to come and debug the system. And they'd walk from one end looking for bugs through the system, take the bugs out, and start working again.
People say guru. Guru of this and guru of that. That's not guru. Misuse of the word. Kind of like giving Gorilla a typewriter. You think a gorilla is going to be intrigued by a typewriter? Of course a gorilla is going to be intrigued by a typewriter. It'll come, it'll jump on it, it'll probably take a leak on it, it'll probably smear, you know, what on it, it'll throw it in the air, it'll smell it. And if it had paper in it, it is entirely possible, randomly speaking, that by throwing it around, jumping up and down it, actually a gorilla would manage to type a word of an English language. Like is, or what, or mmm, or no. Does that make the gorilla a very intelligent Master in English language? Gorillas are intelligent. Master in English language? No. But if somebody really believed that, that would be the same situation as calling a guru of this and a guru of that. No. There was a guy in India, you know, everywhere he went, and he would see somebody plowing a field, he'd go up to them and say, what are you doing? And so I'm plowing a field. Oh, how do you do this? The guy would show him. Oh, you are my guru. He kept doing this, and he had so many gurus.
Finally, he met one who showed him the place inside, and he said, all those ones, no guru. You are the real guru. From darkness to light, that's what the word means. Now, you can use the word for anything else. And I'm not talking about darkness in a room. I mean, we're not talking about GE here. We're talking about that real darkness, ignorance to light. Not just a filament-based light, a mercury-based light, but the light of Knowledge. Light, enlightenment within. So, I'm sorry, I come from the country where this word was used, where it came from. India. And its use in the English language, the way it is being used is absolutely incorrect. I expect it to change. Nor do I expect it to become correct. Because I know what a guru is, and what a value of a guru is in one's life. Whatever you want to call it, that's not the point. But to help that person spread this gift of Knowledge to as many people as want it. Not as many people as possible. As many people as want it. Those who are thirsty and recognize their thirst, this is for them. Those who are willing to make a commitment to practice it, this is for them. That's how it's been.

That's how it's been. A long time ago. I wanted to bring joy in people's lives. That's what I wanted to do. This year in England, in Nottingham, the program is on the 17th, June 16th and 17th. That is, to the date, 30 years when I came to England. I'm still trying to bring joy into people's lives. One would have been enough, but I know that I have brought joy in many people's lives. And that joy continues to unfold. Cool. And it will continue to unfold.
This is a story that will go on and on and on and on.This isn't something that was just started by me. This story goes back, the storytellers go back a long ways. A long ways. And they've told the sweetest story, and those who have listened have been enjoying the sheer bliss of it. Keep doing it. Keep doing it. Let every day be a new start. Let every day be in that gratitude. Let every day be in recognition of that breath that flows through you. Why? Because it sure brings a lot of joy. Joy unparalleled into this life. Let it be that this heart is filled. Let the dry rivers be filled with water and flow again. Bring the nourishment to where it is needed. Let no more lake beds be dry. Let them be filled. And let the light dance on that water once again. And let the jungles be green. And let the house not be neglected anymore. This story can have a wonderful twist. And let it be an extremely happy ending. That's how it needs to be. Well, thank you very much. And I hope that this story continues to unfold and you can participate in it.
And those people who are waiting for Knowledge, I believe there's about 350 or so that are here. I hope you get Knowledge soon. And practice it and enjoy it. Thank you very much.
