Guru Pie-Thrower Seriously Beaten
DETROIT (AP) - A young man who hit a 15-year-old Indian guru with a pie last week was reported in a serious condition today after being beaten by two men he said were followers of the guru.
Police said Pat Halley, a reporter for the underground newspaper Fifth Estate, told them he was beaten Monday night after the two gained entry to his home by saying they had "inside information" on the teen-aged religious leader, Maharaj Ji.
Halley, 21, was admitted to Detroit General Hospital with bruises of the head. Police said they had made no arrests in the case.
Halley threw the pie at the guru when the religious leader appeared at a Detroit Common Council meeting Aug. 7 to accept a welcome to the city.
Halley explained afterward that he felt the guru symbolized "repressive authority."
