Notes On People
There appears to be some rancor in the ranks of Indian gurus. A. C. Bhaktivedanta, the swami who founded the Hare Krishna movement in California in 1965, attacked his spiritual rival, Maharaj-ji, at a news conference in Hong Kong. He denounced the 16-year-old self-styled boy-god as a "dog" and a "cheap cheat." The 78-year-old swami said the young guru was taking advantage of the fact that "God created this world in which there are some fools." The luxury-loving Maharaj-ji, he added, "is cheating people, all right, but he will be cheated in a bigger way, because when God meets cheats, He can he a better cheat than they."
