Guru's Follower Killed

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Jan. 13 (UPI) - Three women followers of the Indian mystic, Guru Maharaj Ji, were shot, one fatally, today when they refused to allow another member of the sect to spend the night, at their Divine Light Mission, the police said. Diane Ames Whitley, 22 years old, of Stowe, Vt., died at a hospital after the shooting. Carl Swanson, a police spokesman, said Richard Douglas Briggs Jr., of Denver walked to police headquarters and surrendered. Mr. Briggs, also a follower of the guru, was charged with first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.
