Maharaji: A True HomeMaharaji, A True Home 2005 E125

The audience immediately stands on Prem Rawat's appearance on stage. It is relatively restrained standing applause, it says we are serious and sensible people, not crazed devotees of a man who formerly claimed he was God Incarnate. This shows it might be an advertised Public Program. Premies have asked as many people as possible to attend or at least they are expected to. Hopefully it will snare some dissatisfied people looking for hope and peace in all the wrong places.

The speech should be titled An Ode To Breath, A Paean To Breath, a Panegyric To Breath - it is that ridiculous

  • "little expectations" demeaning
  • "I'm not here to impress you."
  • One of his most common refains goes like this: "I'm not the one who's going to tell you what you should or shouldn't do." - In every speech he tells people what they should do. Essentially it is: Listen to me, Accept what I say, Practise my Knowledge every day of your life

Words of Peace: Maharaji, A True Home 2005 E125

Maharaji: A True Home
Maharaji: A True Home

Internationally renowned speaker Prem Rawat, also known as Maharaji, speaks to people around the world about the possibility of knowing inner peace and contentment. At the age of 13, he was invited to address audiences in London and Los Angeles [as Guru Maharaj Ji, The Lord of the Universe]. In 1972, he first visited Sydney, and two years later came to Melbourne and Auckland, New Zealand. Speaking at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand, he recently said, The peace that we are looking for is already in the heart. It needs to be felt, and I can help you get in touch with it. Maharaji's message is more than words. People listening to him express finding profound inspiration, a fresh perspective on life, and peace within themselves.

This evening we've come here with our little expectations I'm sure. What is this all about? So it's my responsibility for the next few minutes to clarify something. But what is there to clarify? A lot.

Because a lot has been muddled up. The priorities are skewed. What is so obvious is not so obvious.

So where do I begin? Well, let me begin with saying you are alive. To a lot of people that's like, gee, you know, I dragged myself all the way out here to hear somebody tell me I am alive. That's it. Yes, you are alive. And that is it. That's the best news there is. That's incredible. Because you are alive, there is a possibility that you can be fulfilled. Now we have two things. You are alive and you can be fulfilled. And I know there's a lot of people who, what's next?

Maharaji: A True Home What more? What about talking about a shield that I can have in my life so that when the problems come my way? That's, you know, people are really into that. It's not like I'm going to try to avoid walking on water. I'm going to still walk on water. Just make me better shoes so I can do it. I'm still going to try to fly without an airplane or a helicopter or any device. Just make me some wings that will allow me to do it. And when I fail, I can land softly.

Life isn't like that. Life isn't a bunch of cushions. That you can have here and there. Life demands respect. Life demands clarity. Life demands commitment. Life demands understanding. Life demands simplicity. Life demands that honesty, to hug, to gather every moment, to embrace every moment with the sincerity like you have never experienced before. This isn't something that would be nice to have. No, this is what life demands. There are no ands, ifs, and buts. There are no, well, how can I get around it? Because that's what we're doing. You're driving on the freeway. You're driving too fast. You know an officer is going to pull you over any minute. You're looking around and already what's playing in your mind is what you're going to say. You know, there are no police officers in this life. If you do something wrong, you know about it. Breath doesn't say, well, too bad. You shouldn't have done that. That was your last point. You lose. No, breath keeps on coming. Like that wind that just keeps on coming. It keeps on coming. The past few days have been windy and I was thinking about it. Where does this wind go? Is it pulling up somewhere? No, it just comes and it comes and it comes and it comes. Like does this breath that comes and it comes and it comes and it comes into this. The most precious thing, the most amazing thing comes without a call, without an invitation, without an appointment and it comes. And if it's welcomed, it comes. And if it is not welcomed, it still comes. If it is understood, it comes. And if it is not understood, it still comes.

If it is embraced, it comes. And if it's not embraced, it still comes. If it is accepted, it comes. If it is rejected, it still comes. How beautiful is that? How incredible is that? And because the stakes are so high. The stakes are so high. Because we're talking about a breath. One breath. Irreplaceable.

Long time ago, I was somewhere, I was reading this book about the Fabergé egg. And I was like, this is precious. No mention of breath. That is precious. Irreplaceable, intricate. And it is coming, and it is going. And time is sitting there, beating, pounding, like a pendulum. Go, go, go. I know for so many people, time is their enemy. Like, time, I have time, I have time. I wish I had more time. But you realize that time is the great facilitator? Time has been given to you, so you can experience joy, so you can experience fulfillment. Time is not your enemy, time is your friend. Question is, you know, do you know how to tell who is your friend and who is your enemy? Time is not trying to make you race. It is in fact accommodating, facilitating.

This beautiful dance that could take place in your life. You could be happy, you could experience, you could enjoy. Right now, the markings of time have been wrinkles. Stress. Few days ago, I was doing this project, and it was no time, and the deadlines were just zipping past, one after another. I'm still working on it, still working on it, still working on it. 6 o'clock in the morning to 10 o'clock at night. And I was like, I need more time, need more time, need more time. And one day I was quite stressed out, sitting there in front of the computer doing this. I stopped, put the mouse down, backed off. So what am I saying? Time, I have more of or less of, it is there.

It is facilitating something, maybe I'm not looking at that. What is it facilitating? And then all of a sudden, it became obvious, it is facilitating the coming and going of this breath. It is facilitating that I can be content. Because if there was no time, then one thing that I wouldn't have is the opportunity to be fulfilled. And it is because I have that time, I can be fulfilled. But what does it take? So let me give you a little analogy.

Maharaji: A True Home

Ant, a little ant, a tiny little ant.Have you seen an ant? You've seen an ant. You've seen one ant, you've seen all ants. There they are, always going about their business, really busy. Off they go. They get a little disconcerned when you come along. You know, they know you might step on them or something. Then they just race off to their own little direction. A little ant. And they have to go places. They have to find food, they have to go places. But there is one thing that is really remarkable about an ant. And it's a very simple thing that's very remarkable about a little ant. This ant, this tiny little ant, may venture all over the place. And you must appreciate that your lawn is like a big thick jungle forest for this little thing. And it goes, and it goes, and where it has to go it doesn't even know sometimes, but it goes. But there is one thing very special. And that is, this ant knows how to get back home. It's very important. But this little ant is really, really, really important. Got to get back home. Think about that. Wherever it goes, whatever it's doing, whatever trail it's smelling, looking at the sun, taking its fixes, so that it can remember how to get back home.

Do you know how to get back home? Because if you have mastered the art of going out, but not coming back, it's a half mastery. It's kind of a one-way experiment and people do that. Make their list. This is what I want in my life. This is what will make me happy. This is what I need to have in my life. This is how it should be. Fine, go. Go wherever you have to go. Do whatever you have to do.

I'm not the one who's going to tell you what you should or shouldn't do. But a piece of good advice. Do you know how to get back home? Where is your home? So many forms sometimes you have to fill out. Home address. Now they specify, not P.O. Box, home address, street address. Oh yeah, I know my home address. This is my home address. Is it? Where is home? What is home? What do you call home? Some place where you can hang your hat. You can hang your hat. So far there's a hook. You know, what is this thing about hanging your hat? What if you wear a hat? Does that mean you need a home?

Of all the places, and I travel a lot, and I have been to a lot of very, very special places. I've been to Egypt, I've seen the Taj Mahal, and they brag about all those pyramids, that's, I mean, that's all they do, brag, oh look, it's really old, and it was really beautiful, and this was this way, and this king had it built, and like, okay, okay, great, incredible, stand there, they're monumental, but not once did I ever say, you know, I'd love to live here, Taj Mahal made out of marble, incredible place, but not once did I have the desire, you know, this would make a nice living room, no, home, there's another kind of home, and this home is within you, and you carry it within you, wherever you go, do you know the address, do you know how to get there, you know how to go out, you know everything about out there, everything, who lives there, what happens there, this should be this way, that should be that way, what about home? I'm asking questions, you have to answer them, maybe I can get you to think a little bit in a different direction, and if I can do that, I'm doing good, ask a little bit, here I am, I'm alive, what does this mean? I travel, I see people, I see people, Indians, I see Indians, I see people, Chinese, I see Chinese, I see people.

Maharaji: A True Home

Here is a person who carries within them hope, why hope? Why? Because we need it, we're going to need hope, there will be that time, there will, there will be that time, where you are going to need hope, there is going to be that time, where you will need understanding, there will be that time, where you will need that joy, that's why there is joy, and there will be that time, where you will need peace, that's why there is peace, you will need, no explanations now, explanations, they're luxury, explanations are luxury, when nothing is desperate, then you can have explanations, and that's what people do, what do they do? Let's talk about hope, let's read about hope, let's make beautiful poetry about hope, let's make a beautiful song about hope, and I say to you, feel hope, feel it, because it's there, it's not some distant thing out there in this world, that someday, you have to dream about hope, you can have hope in your life, you have to dream about peace, you can have peace in your life, you have to dream about fulfillment, you have to brush aside fulfillment, you have to say, well you know, I know when that's going to happen, I have the time to be fulfilled, I'm sorry, I'm too busy, you know, if you were really busy being fulfilled, and you said, you know, I have time for anything else, that would be exquisite, that would be marvelous, if you said, I am so busy being in peace, I'm sorry, I have any time left for anything else, that would be exquisite, but this is not a fantasy, this is how it needs to be, this is not some distant thing, this is how it needs to be in each person's life.

What is the process of discovery? What is the process of discovery? Long time ago, a very famous captain steers his ship in Australia into this bay and goes, that's it, turns around and leaves. And he had a very particular idea of how it should be. And there was someone else who kept walking and walking and walking and walking and walking and walking and walking till he got to the other side. Process of discovery isn't to already have a book made and say, well, this is what I'm about to discover. Process of discovery is to stand there, look at it, and go, look what I discovered. That's discovery. That's discovery. Look at that. Look at that tree. I discovered that tree. Look at that. There's a big difference between a guided tour and going on a discovering adventure. And I am challenging you. It's a little better word. To discover. Discover. Not your neighbor. Not your neighbor. I mean, it's a wonderful thing to have good neighbors. It really is. Believe me, it is. But that's not what I'm talking about. Discover your neighbor. Discover your car. Discover Disneyland. No.

Maharaji: A True Home The challenge is, discover you. You. Not Peter, Paul, Robin. You. You are not your name. You are not your face. More than that, too many hats. Too many hats. Too many roles to play. I'm a father. I'm an uncle. I'm a friend. I'm a colleague. I'm an office worker. Let me remind you. There you were once. About that big. The only thing you could say. Wah. Does that come with a comma? Should that be a semicolon? Exclamation mark? What kind of punctuation should that have? You really didn't care. Is this the right environment to be saying wah? Didn't matter. Wah was wah. When the wah was needed, the wah came. Wah. Mother said, shh. Wah. And the next thing you know, big earthquake. That's what the parents do. It's okay. Shh. Wah. What does that do? Next word, wah. That was your entire vocabulary. Wah. What was your IQ? Wah. What were you qualified to do? Wah. What would your resume look like? Wah. What have you accomplished in your whole life? Wah. Then you got a little older. Fascinated by everything. Drooling. Now everybody carries a handkerchief. There you were. Saliva is coming right out of the mouth. It does not matter. Food is in front of you and you decide you want to play with it. You're taking it and you're playing with it. You're stucking it in your mouth and you're sticking it to the chair. You're seeing anything else that might be hungry. Maybe the floor needs some. you realize there's millions of people hungry? And there you are, taking this food and playing with it. No.

And then, you got a little older than that. And now… Yes. I need to dress up. I need to be like this. And of course, at that age, you know, you realize you start rounding up your age. At one point, you didn't care about age. You're one year old. Big deal. Now, maybe you are 10, maybe you are 11. Well, at 11, you're almost 13. At 13, you're almost 18. I mean, the rounding up. It's worse than accountants. It's just like, next jump. Major jump. And here you are. Whatever your age may be.

So what happened to that one-year-old? What happened to that wang? There you go. Didn't die. You know that. Because you're here. Where did that little one go? I'll tell you. Still there. Still going whang. It's only one focus. To be content. To be happy. To be satisfied. One focus. To be fulfilled. One focus. And you see? Through all those years, that's all you have wanted. All you have wanted. When you were six months old, that's all you wanted. When you were one-year-old, that's all you wanted. When you were two years old, that's all you wanted. When you were three years old, that's all you wanted. it. When you were 16, that's all you wanted. If it meant to go play that way, if it meant to dress up that way, if it meant to do this, if it meant to do that, you were going to do it because somehow, if it could bring you fulfillment, that was so important. So nothing has changed. Here you are, at your age, and fulfillment is still important. And it'll be next year, too. And it will be next year, too. And it will be next year, too. And for as long as you are, as long as you're going to live, this beautiful gift of breath will come into you. Listen to what I'm saying. This is not a joke. For as long as you are going to be alive, this gift of breath will come into you, as certain as the sun that shines in the sky. And it is the only thing that will be there till the very end. Nothing else. Alright, that's the end of the heavy stuff.

My suggestion is, if you're going to have such an intimate relationship with this thing, because it is pretty intimate, wherever you go, it's there. You go to sleep, it's there. You wake up, it's there. You go to the bathroom, it's there. You go to the bathroom, it's there. You feel sad, it's there. You are happy, it's there. You're crying, it's still there. You are laughing, it's still there. The world has fallen apart, it's still there. Didn't you get to know? It's free. It is the one thing that is so valuable that it is beyond price. Priceless.

You're stuck with it. You're stuck with it. You can't trade it. You can't give yours to somebody. Nobody can give theirs to you. You're stuck with yours. It just so happens that if you could discover what this is all about, that each breath is buried infinite joy. People, wherever I go, they really think, you know, that peace is, somebody's going to turn some key and there'll be peace. No. Peace begins with every single one of us. This is, this is the battlefield. The destroyers in here can do more destruction than you could ever possibly even begin to understand. The wars that rage in here are unbelievable and to have in the center of this battlefield, a peace. So it is. So it is.

A tree in the middle of a desert. Nobody can tell that tree, you know, you're in the wrong place. Here I am. Here I am. And I am here because what I need is here. Have you ever seen those trees coming out of the side of a rock? And they're green and they're beautiful, but they're, I mean, talk about being precarious for a tree. Rock coming out of it sideways. I looked at one and I said, hmm, boy, that's odd. Then I started thinking about it. What's odd? Nothing odd. This tree got what it needed and where it did, it bloomed, it germinated. You too are a seed. Beautiful thing is, a seed doesn't care how long. It's a very wonderful thing about a seed. It's not about how long. It's when the conditions are right. Time to go. Time to do the magic. Time to sprout. So it is. So it is. When you make that decision in your life, when you say, yeah. People say, well what does it take? It takes a thirst. To understand the value of water, it takes thirst. It takes thirst.

Maharaji: A True Home

I know, when I arrive somewhere, people go, oh please sit down, sit down. I'm standing up, please sit down. It's okay, I've been sitting for 8 hours. I want to stand. But if I was standing, I've been sitting for 8 hours and somebody said, sit down. Thank you. Here I am. Because I have been sitting, because I need to sit, I've got this whole little thing worked out. Oh you know, I've been sitting for 8 hours, so I just really need to extend my legs and you know, it feels good. Thank you very much anyways. And then, at least somebody offered me a chair, offered me a sofa. And I know, I know very, very well that when I need to sit down and there is no chair there, is that a problem? No. Sit on the ground. Not a problem.

When the need, when the need becomes obvious, then that is the day you will not be looking for explanations. When your hunger becomes so obvious, that's when you stop going through the recipe books and you head for the kitchen. That's where you will find me. I'm in the kitchen. I clean the pots, I clean the pans and I keep the refrigerator supplied. And when the hungry come and I ask them, what would you like to eat? Because those who are not hungry just peek in. What are you doing here? And it's a lonely place because everybody else is in the library. That's where all the books are. And they're pondering through all the recipes. Looking at all the recipes. And discussing, discussing what would be good to eat. And they're getting off on it. It's fine. Wouldn't that be wonderful? Oh, isn't that gonna be incredible? Oh, wouldn't that be just exquisite? Oh yeah, and you could put a little parsley on. Oh my God! Oh, that would be just wonderful.

Okay. Have your day. Fine. Do your thing. Fine. But if you get hungry, come to the kitchen. That's where real food is. Now remember, taste was given to you so that you may eat. And enjoy eating. So you wouldn't go, I'm hungry but I'd rather stay with this hunger than eat that. I've had that experience. I've been places where the food was so bad. Like, well you know, I'm really hungry but I think I'll just stick it out here. Not a problem. But you see what happens is that taste was given so that we may enjoy the process of eating. But we have become so involved with the taste that we have forgotten the value of food. Now taste means everything. And we have the ability to discuss taste. That doesn't mean we can actually taste it. But we can certainly discuss it. A little lemon and a few peppers and people are going, oh that sounds so good.

It does. But remember, you can't eat through your ears. You stick that tortilla in your ear and it's not going to sound good. This is just a little play on words, you know, because that's what we do. Oh that sounds so good. But you actually eat through your ears. So it's a misnomer to say it sounds good because what has that got to do with it? There's only one time when the food is there you put it in your mouth that you can say that tastes so good. And then there's another little part to it. And you know what that is? When you're really really hungry, all you can go is mmm. Now what does mmm mean? It's not in the dictionary. It doesn't go mmm means that tastes really good. Just mmm. Somebody said that a long long time ago. That eating this beautiful food of peace, of joy is the most exquisite thing and yet it is very much like a mute person who's eating a wonderful sweet. What can you do? Just like mmm. So, thank you for coming this evening, taking some time out. If you want to talk to me, I'm in the kitchen. In many words, I can help.

If you want this, I can help. This is what I've been doing, I can't say all my life. Somebody said that, somebody who rides bulls. saw it on TV, "I've been doing this all my life." No, there was a time you were whang, not a bull rider. But, for a very long part, I've been doing this, helping people. What do I do? Right now, all I'm doing is letting you smell what I'm cooking. That's what these are. People come, I can tell them. If you're not hungry, what difference does it make? If you're hungry, yeah. And you have to get to the point not where it sounds good, or smells good. Because you can't stick a tortilla up your nose either. That wouldn't work. It has to get to the point where it's, this tastes good. This tastes good. That's where it has to come to.

If you're not interested in this, fine. Go your way, live your life. And whilst you're living your life, just remember, that this breath will come to you for as long as you live. And there's something very special about each breath that comes into you. Remember that. It started you off, and it's going to be there till the very end. Is peace a necessity, or a luxury? ask me, ask your heart. ask your mind. Mind is the great explainer. Mind is the very thing that says, that sounds good. Your logic. Try to apply the logic of the heart. Is peace a luxury, or a necessity? Why do I do this? I love it. I love it. I absolutely love it.

I'm not here to impress you. If you want to be impressed, you have to be impressed by your life. If you want to be impressed, you have to be impressed with your breath. If you want to be impressed, be impressed with your heart. My God, talk about perseverance. Redefined. That's what the heart has done. Redefined perseverance. From that time of the whang, it's been added. Exactly the same way. And years have rolled by, and every year that has come, you may look at yourself as different. But think about it. Has it been really that different? Isn't the quest the same, again and again? For those who want to pursue that, I can help. For those who want it, thank you for coming. I hope you learned something. Because that's the possibility. Every day you can learn something. It's a learning. A lot of people learn how to fall. That's what they get really good at. They can fall.

Somehow I think that's that incredible of a learning. People say, you know, if you make mistakes, you won't learn. But that doesn't mean you just go out there and make mistakes, so you can learn. There's got to be another way. And to me there is. Turn within. When I say this, turn within, people are like, there's nothing inside. Just because you haven't been there, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Just because you haven't eaten a certain fruit, does not mean it does not exist. Just because you haven't sailed a certain ocean, does not mean it does not exist. Just because you have not bathed in a certain river, does not mean it doesn't exist. It does, it does, it does. And if you want to go in, I can help in that journey. Now people will say, yeah, I'll get in the back seat, you drive, we'll be there. No, no, no, no, no. This is not like that. You are not a chauffeur. You will have to do your own walking, every step of the way. So that's how, as simple as it can be.

So thank you again for coming, and I hope you all have a wonderful, wonderful life. Thank you, good night.
