Anand Band

This is one of the earliest band of premies in the West and their songs were sung regularly in satsang meetings, at least in Australia. They also provided songs for the early DLM films and for the 1996 "historical" video, I Have This Knowledge. I doubt that "King of Kings" is being played publicly at Rawat's events these days but "Spread This Knowledge" has been one of the all-time Rawatism favourites and is still being sung 40 years later by Rawat's daughter which is rather pathetic really as the Knowledge hasn't spread as anyone sitting in a hall at one of Rawat's "events" can plainly see.

Members of the Anand Band included Polly Bolton, Kevin Dempsey and Tim Hain. Hain is still a professional musician and a devoted follower 40 years later, appearing at Rawat's "events" and his song "Feel Like A King" was the one highlight (to me) of the Long Beach 1995 CD. Guitar virtuoso Dempsey has been playing with some of the giants of British folk including Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick though he seems to specialise in playing with fiddlers, especially young and beautiful ones. Ms Bolton who also sang with Blue Aquarius has had a long and varied artistic career. "You Call To Us Oh Lord" was used in 1998 in the Élan Vital short video the Connection though 'Lord' was replaced by 'Maharaji' which is a ridiculous substitution as Rawat translates 'Maharaji' as "the Ultimate Ruler" but then only his devotees know that.

Their music provides further evidence for the truism "Fools rush in where wise men fear to tread." Though they had only limited meditation experience and knew next to nothing about their guru they believed the young Maharaji was the Perfectly Realized One, the immortal and incarnate God and in songs such as Lord of the Universe, King of Kings, Oh Lord We've Been Waiting So Long and If You Want To Go To Heaven they recorded their faith for all to hear. They expressed ecstatic love for the unprepossessing, short, fat, pimply and luxury loving Perfect Master, a love based on virtually no actual relationship with Rawat himself but on much self-deception, peer pressure and ignorance. It is likely that most of these singers, musicians and song-writers no longer have any belief in their one-time Lord of the Universe but even those who have remained devotees for 40 years will now deny he is God, ever was God and that if they really believed that he used to be God they were mistaken and were victims of a conspiracy by his family and the Indian, shaven-headed, saffron robe-wearing, so-called mahatmas who brainwashed them with Hindu concepts.

The Anand Band were also involved in recording a 7" 45 RPM EP Record - Shri Guru Maharaj Ji/Anand Band - Thine To Thee in 1972 which included 3 of their songs and a section of Prem Rawat's speech at the Montrose Guru Puja festival in June 1972.

This song was a popular one in the '70s, and it was still sung to Maharaji to this day during programs. It was included on the Drifting CD with the words 'Lord' and 'Father' being replaced by 'Maharaji' to make it less controverisal. As Maharaji translates 'Maharaji' as Ultimate Ruler it relies on ignorance to remove the possible controversy. It was performed at the celebration for the 25th Anniversary of his arrival in the West.
