Prem Rawat's Major Band: One Foundation

From its creation in 1971, the Divine Light Mission had an important role for Prem Rawat's followers who are musicians. This role continued long after the organisation changed its name in the early 1980s. Music is an important tool for reinforcing emotion, and to a large extent both mirrors and sets the actual tone of Prem Rawat's followers' emotions. It is an important indicator of beliefs in the group and it's evolution reveals much that is not available from examination of the group's other publicly available material.

It especially shows the extent of the worship of and devotion to Rawat as a divine figure and exposes the current Élan Vital revisionist history that Rawat attempted to remove the beliefs in his divinity as well as the Indian trappings of Divine Light mission in the 1970's. Even a cursory examination of the "Court Of Love" tape by "the Holy Jesters" SLT 018 released in early 1982 by Élan Communications shows that Indian style devotion was being openly promoted in the organisations even as the renaming of Divine Light Mission as Élan Vital, was in progress. The lyrics (as underlined below), demonstrate how music within the cult setting reinforces the extreme personality worship that is part of Rawat's "teachings".

During the late 1970's and early 1980's the Australian band "One Foundation" was the mainstay of Prem Rawat's festivals and DLM released quite a few audio tapes of their songs and some of their dance music is available on OneTube. One Foundation was made up of Kim Field, girl singer and major songwriter, Lindsay Field, who has been a longtime backup singer for John Farnham, Australia's most popular singer. Geoff Bridgford, drummer and prolific song-writer had been the drummer for the Bee Gees and a major force in Blue Aquarius, Prem Rawat's brother's band. Joe Creighton, bass player, has had a very successful musical career in Australia since leaving the group and Ross Hannaford, lead guitar virtuoso and former member of one of Australia's all-time most successful bands, Daddy Cool. At least one of the members, Joe Creighton, now believes he was sucked in hook line and sinker to a great deal of bullshit and detests the principles that were operating in Divine Light Mission. Another "apostate", Michael McDonald, wrote the lyrics for the One Foundation song "Surdas The Gardener".

Kim O'Leary, Lindsay Field and Geoff Bridgford, have been the major songwriters among Rawat's devotees. Her songs have had a significant, positive impact on the success of Rawat's career since the mid-1970's. They are nearly always strongly emotional ballads espousing extreme views of devotion and gratitude to Rawat ("Maharaji" or Great King as he calls himself) and a complete reliance on his power and grace. They are songs that Rawat's followers have heard for decades and can induce a deep trance state in them quickly and easily.

Due to copyright restrictions, free downloads of some of these 40 year old songs that were never released except in the confines of the Rawatism cult have been removed. Prem Rawat made tens of millions of dollars from the emotions these songs raised in the hearts of his followers but the songwriters have never received any reasonable recompense. Without the input of many talented musicians I doubt the fat, toad like Guru Maharaj Ji or Prem Rawat would have lived in luxury all these years. Kim O'Leary has copyrighted some of her songs so for these only small clips are available to meet legal restrictions.

In the early 1980s the music became more Indian influenced and One Foundation and the Holy Jesters under the tutelage of Mahatma Gurucharananad began to adapt and sing and play outrageously worshipful Indian bhajans and write new bhajanish songs.

A friend taped some of the music played at the Holi festival in 1980, from the audience, and the sound is not as bad as one might expect.
