Prem Rawat Celebrates His Father From Whom He Inherited Everything
Guru Maharaj Ji / Hans Jayanti Festival / Kissimmee, Florida / November 11 1978, Saturday evening
All of Maharaji's (and Prem Rawat's) speeches are edited when printed. His unique speech patterns and word sequences are normalised and some of his stock phrases are translated into English. Some of his comments about specific premies are excised. Maharaji had a cold throughout the festival and would often clear his nose by sucking up the mucus and swallowing it, noisily. I recorded this a few times only. This might be a form of the Nectar Technique. He nearly always says 'gonna,' 'wanna' etc, rather than "going to" and uses other similar abbreviations. He regularly says 'just,' "I mean" and "you know" unnecessarily. He says "you know" around 100 times in the 1 hour and 11 minute speech, close to 1 ½ times a minute.
- Maharaji shouts and screams very strongly against the use of a timer for meditation. Consciously or otherwise, this is another way of putting his followers into a double-bind situation. He sets up a dichotomy: Do regular meditation but do not take "the Knowledge" and make it "a part of your life." Its as if by setting regular hours and regular times, without having to worry about meditating for too long and missing appointments then all the rest of your life is devoted to not practising Knowledge. Of course, He has never been known to actually sit in meditation for more than a moinute.
- He absolutely mangles Brahmanand's poem "I Have Seen A Great Wonder" which is the most mentioned poem by Rawat senior and junior, apart from Arti which is also a translation of a Brahmanand song. Brahmanand is second only to Kabir for mentions by Prem Rawat throughout his career.
- He tells a story about his pilot teacher and buddy, Bill Bach, having a torrid time with a bladder full of coffee. For some reason, Bach doesn't want to use the private jet's toilet. This story did not make it intto the Divine Times transcript of this speech
- It was in this speech that he gave his "eggless mayonnaise" satsang. It was as close to being funny as he ever got. Along wth riffs on Nectar Ale and Tima-Cola he liked to ridicule his initiators and ashramees in any way possible though, to be fair, premies had mainly been health food freaks and were often quite ridiculous in their "food trips."
- He talks about his computer running at 3000 baud and higher. Modem speeds are measured in baud rate, not computer speeds.
- He fantasises about buying a huge piece of land and and having a Divine City. This gives him a chance to ridicule his brother who does seem to be an airhead, a buffoon and a schlemiel and fantasise about his favourite topic, technology. It also refers to one of the basic and most prevalent practices of the premie world, rumours.
- One of the most common type of premie rumours are premie "miracle tales" often to do with people who meet premies, are smitten and have a meaningful backstory to explain the grace required to bring this miracle about. Maharaji repeats one that was already spreading throughout the festival goers. He understands that satsang meetings and the open hearted exchange that can happen there has an attractive power but he thinks it is Himself and His speeches that attracts people. No-one can tell Him the truth. He is the elephant in the room.
- Prem Rawat (as did his father) claimed to reveal Raj(a) Yoga, Royal Yoga so he could expect to get some questions about it, kundalina and chakras and so and so forth. In late 1978 he was still whining about being expected to answer complex questions that the Satguru should be able to answer without thinking about it.
- He talks about giving satsang and how incredibly blissful he felt. There is not the slightest evidence in this video of that. There is a lot of shouting, criticism of his followers and their poor effort so far and constant claims of how perfect "the Knowledge" is supposed to be.
One of Maharaji's most devoted and dedicated long-term premies/students is retired Professor Ron Geaves. Geaves is no academic giant but he is unique in writing positive articles about Maharaji/Prem Rawat. In 2006 he wrote:
"The period from 1977 to 1982 was marked by … a series of international events in which Prem Rawat inspired personal loyalty and devotion from the already committed through a number of highly charismatic appearances in which he would dance on stage." - Journal of Alternative Spiritualities and New Age Studies
This dancing may have inspired the already committed and devoted, like Geaves, but it put a death knell to the possibility of any further large scale attraction of new devotees and probably led to the exodus of more of those not fully committed such as myself.
Guru Maharaj Ji / Hans Jayanti Festival / Kissimmee, Florida / November 11 1978, Saturday evening
Dear premies, this is supposed to be, and for some premies, is, the last night of this seven day Hans Jayanti.
I know that we all came here and had, I don't know, before we all came here we had some kind of an imagination, maybe you know people who had been to Montrose thought about it a little bit that way. And uh really we haven't had much too many open door programs maybe people who were in Orlando thought of it that way. But we really haven't had too many programs that have been outdoors, and that so many premies have really come to.
And I know that I had an imagination of what, maybe, this program was going to be like. But so far, it really hasn't been that way. So far, it really hasn't been the way people would think it would be. It's been a lot more incredible. It's been a lot more beautiful. And I don't know what happened to seven days, probably the smoothest, fastest seven days I've ever spent in satsang. (applause, loud cheering) And I think that in our lives. You know today there were a lot of new premies. And uh we had a darshan line for them. And there were some premies who missed it, a darshan line for them, too. And yet there are some aspirants here who haven't received Knowledge yet. I think and I know a lot of premies who are here, some premies who haven't come for a long, long time. Premies from India, premies from Japan, Australia. Everywhere! Fifty-nine countries. There are even supposed to be two premies here from Poland.
And I think that in our lives we all needed this program so much, to be able to just come and be in Guru Maharaj Ji's shelter, just to be able to come and be in Guru Maharaj Ji's satsang for one week.
I know that, you know, by holding two-day festivals or three- day festivals its like, it's like I was saying the other day. You come in and it's like, "Hi, how are you?" Look who's here, who's not here. "Did you see that guy?" "Did you see that guy?" You know. Second day it's darshan. Third day it's the end of the program. And I think that maybe in some people who have been here, the mind has really tried to dominate them. Not all. Of course not. But to some people, as this Love, as this incredible program became more and more stronger, and for the mind as it became more and more obvious, you know, it just automatically just became even stronger. And maybe there were more, even more ridiculous things that started to come in people's heads, and that's all what we have to get rid of in our lives. I don't know how many premies are going to be able to come, if there is a festival before the end of this year, if, a big if, and I don't know how many premies will be able to come to a Holi and I don't know how many premies will be able to come to Guru Puja. I don't know how many premies will come for this ha ha ha well that one and that one and that one and I don't know how many more but remember one thing: that it isn't coming into a programme that we have to say, "Oh yeah, now I have to really remember satsang, service and meditation," that, "Yes, I am in this concentrated place, a three-day festival. I'm going to see Guru Maharaj Ji, so I better do some satsang, service and meditation." "I pray that Guru Maharaj Ji, you have another festival, so that I can go do satsang, service, and meditation." You can't have that kind of an attitude.
Satsang, service and meditation have to become whole for us, complete for us. This life has to merge and become a part of satsang, service and meditation, of that Knowledge. Our life has to be taken and surrendered to Guru Maharaj Ji, so that our realization, so that our experience, may never die, may never end, may never finish.
Because it's so easy to lose it. It's so easy. What does it take? Here you are sitting in some situation Here you are, in some kind of a situation. And all of a sudden the mind can come in, penetrate, and that's it. It's all gone. It's all lost. And really, premies, every time we lose it, it's five steps backwards for us. Every time we lose it, it multiplies and multiplies.
First time maybe it's only one step. Second time, it's two. Third time, it's twenty! Forty. A hundred. Two hundred. A thousand. Fifty-thousand.
Just, you know, what, what have we become in our lives? As Guru Maharaj Ji takes us above and above and above and above and above all this illusion, we have to hang onto Guru Maharaj Ji more and more and more and more and more strongly. Because who would, who would like themselves shattered from that experience of satsang, service and meditation?
What is that experience of satsang, service and meditation, that experience that really manifests, that experience that's really true, that experience that's really real? I mean look at the power. Look at the, look at satsang. And that experience is so incredible. That experience is so strong. Because it's Sat.
When satsang happens, I know that say the satsang starts happening you know and the mind starts to go there and the mind tries to go there, mind tries to be everywhere at the same time. The most ridiculous thoughts maybe appear. The most ridiculous things start happening to you: "Oh yeah. My foot is itching. Oh, my foot is going to sleep. Oh my, I've got a bad back!"
And a lot of times you know you see premies doing meditation, and here they are, you know in their meditation form. They're sitting. They really are concentrating. They are doing meditation. Slowly and slowly and slowly and slowly this mind you know slowly starts to merge in, merge in, merge in, merge in, merge in, merge in, faster and faster and faster. And before you know it, you know they started sitting like this (slumped) and they lose it. And then their hands get relaxed and more relaxed and they start to fall and fall and all of a sudden there they are sitting straight and that all drops down. Their legs automatically want to go straight, back goes right towards the wall. And the head just slowly droops over. That's it!
When we are watching a movie, you know, featuring this or that actor, and the whole thing is you know maybe about space ships or maybe the whole thing is about you know maybe all these new movies are coming out I don't even know what they are, how many times when we go to see a movie in our lives, first time, do we fall asleep? How many people who went to see Star Wars for the first time fell asleep in the movie? Nobody. Why? You know its just like you gaze and gaze. "What was that? What was that? What was that?" And how many of us will watch a movie again and again and again and again and again till we know it inside out, till we understand the whole picture, till we understand the whole plot, every nook and cranny, everything we understand.
But do we really do that with the experience of satsang, service and meditation? Do we really do that with the experience of Knowledge? No. We fall asleep. You know we "drooze" off; just doze off. You know. And I mean premies go through this whole trip of all of a sudden here they are sleeping. And maybe for some reason they wake up and they find themselves sleeping and they pop right back up.
And then the premie goes, "Oh I better go have some coffee." Instead of staying with that experience of Knowledge, instead of just trying a little harder: "Oh I better go have some cup of coffee." The mind says, "It'll be a great idea. You'll be awake for you know doing satsang, service and meditation. You can now you know do better meditation because you will be awake. You should have so much coffee."
So you go there. Drink one cup, another cup or a big mug of coffee. And you drink it. "Oh yeah, that feels great." The mind goes, "I told you, you would be awake. That was a really good idea." Twenty minutes, not more than twenty minutes later, you have got to go to the bathroom. And you from that time on you will probably go to the bathroom every twenty minutes until you have gotten rid of all your coffee. You know.
Will Bill Bach's Bursting Bladder Blow? - removed from the Elan Vital transcript
I remember Bill [Bach] was telling me once a story. You know he used to drink a lot of coffee for flying airplanes and he drank this coffee and drank and drank and drank and he was full of coffee. And they were flying, you know I guess it was a jet, and people are in the back and you didn't wanna go use the bathroom. It's a pretty small jet and he really had to go and I just, you know, when you have coffee in your stomach and wants to get out, it's gonna get out, one way or the other and it's like when he came in for a landing he couldn't care if it was gonna be smooth or not. He just put her on the ground, rushed it over and just flew out of the aeroplane to go to the bathroom. Then this might be a little stretch of the truth but it was something like that.
The Non-cola Colas
And you look at just that little, even that little contraption. Today, you know, they have Tima Cola, Nectar Ale, you know, and I know a lot of premies have Nectar Ale in their house. They have a refrigerator full of Nectar Ale. Premies send Nectar Ale from New York or wherever, you know, constantly, pretty much. Okay, they're a great drink. That same drink and I mean it's like Coca Cola or Coca Cola is a bad drink for you, bad drink or you can't drink Coca Cola. Okay. So because it is bad you stop drinking Coca Cola but the desire to drink a drink didn't go away. Found a substitute. Nectar Ale. Glug glug glug glug. You know, or this Tima Cola. Have a Tima Coll you know. And that's just Coca-cola, You know that does, it doesn't harm you as much as Coca-cola does. It tastes like Coca-cola. I think it tastes very strange when it's warm and it's, you know, just like all these, all these concepts that come into us.
The Famous Eggless Mayonnaise Satsang
I know for a long time premies were using this product called eggless mayonnaise. "Oh yeah, you know, in the ashram we're not allowed to have eggs. But how can we live without mayonnaise? How is my sandwich going to taste without mayonnaise? My mayonnaise! Where are you?" What a Romeo and Juliet love story! Jesus.
Probably the day somebody found eggless mayonnaise, he came barging into the ashram and said, "Look! Look what I found. You know what? This doesn't have eggs in it. We can finally have this in our lives." And probably they even knelt down in front of the altar and said, "Thank you, Guru Maharaj Ji." (laughter) And it really is sometimes, sometimes that kind of a story. "Wow, man, incredible."
And after probably after those first people discovered eggless mayonnaise, they probably filled the shelves with it, and everybody, everybody was having mayonnaise. Mayonnaise was all over the place: over the salad, in the sandwiches, in the coffee, and everything! The Bog Prashad of the ashram: eggless mayonnaise only. "Easy to serve. Here. Mix it with charanamrit you know."
And then, just recently I read an article that the FDA closed them down, this one kind, because they found these guys bathing these bottles of regular mayonnaise in hot water, peeling the labels off, and sticking the labels on: "Eggless Mayonnaise." And the thing is, is it really the eggless mayonnaise that's going to give us salvation or do this and do that?
To me, it is the attitude that mind brings in. "Oh yeah, look. These mayonnaise are okay. Eat em. This Coca-Cola, this Tima Cola doesn't harm you like Coca Cola does. Drink it all the time. And the Nectar Ale, it is the In thing. Drink it and it is good for you, all the time."
And it is like trying to be a sage, trying to be a renounced (renounce the whole world), trying to be a, you know, aperson who is going to move into his private monastery, with the red carpets everywhere, air conditioning everywhere, people to serve him all the time, yo know, fans and uh you know, incredible chandeliers and automobiles waiting everywhere, four chefs, you know, eating all the time and I mean living a life of what you would call extreme luxury and calling it, "I have renounced the world."
And what is Guru Maharaj Ji want us to do? Where does Guru Maharaj Ji want to take us? Guru Maharaj Ji wants to take us from the errors of eggless mayonnaise away, from all of these frantic desires of mind. He wants to take us away from that.
Maharaji's Meditation Timer Madness
You know and it is like that one thing that premies had. Fifteen minute timer or half an hour timer. You turn the timer on, and here it is going, "tic-tic-tic," and then you try to do, you know, meditation. Because with this, you can do meditation and you don't have to bother about anything because it'll automatically go "bing!" and you can wake up and go by ???.
And to me, like that I just couldn't understand it from the first day. "Why?" You Know. Why like that? When we drink water or eat food, we want to eat food till we are satisfied. We want to drink water till we are satisfied. How good would it be, would it really be if here we are really, really thirsty and all somebody all somebody gives us is one sip of water, one spoonful of water?
What about when we are satisfied, then there is no problem. And you can times, and look at the extent that what mind works at. That's that's the one, that's the thing that gets you. Just look at it. Outrageous. Incredible. "Have a timer."
Man, even when you're sleeping and you have an alarm clock, the alarm clock has a function of snooze, called the snooze function. And when the alarm kicks on, you just fumble over to the alarm clock, hit the snooze button, and it'll go off. And fifteen or twenty minutes later, it'll come back on again. But not with meditation timers. When they went "bing," that was bing.
And that is the situation. That's when you get stuck in a situation when you try to take the Knowledge and make it a part of your life. "Yes, okay, from 11 o'clock to 12 o'clock, I'm going to do satsang, service and meditation. That's the time for really the purpose of my life. For the rest of the time, in my life, I'm going to do what has nothing to do with the life."
And I mean that's just maybe only one obvious stage of the mind. Maybe that's a little bit of what the mind can really do. Maybe that's just nothing compared to how it really gets us, how it really eats us away.
Guru Maharaj Ji is like a Doctor
And Guru Maharaj Ji is like this doctor who says, "Look, I have medicine for you. By taking this medicine, you know, you will feel better." And you know Guru Maharaj Ji analyzes maybe you know in different ways what your disease is, what your symptoms are or what your problem really is!
And Guru Maharaj Ji says, "Look. It's like you have a cough. And there is this mucus that your body wants to get rid of. And that's why it goes into this muscular convulsion, to kick out this mucus, to get rid of it. But the way you are, the way your health has deteriorated, the way you have given no attention to this body, the way you have been sick, your body is completely uncapable of getting rid of that mucus. So, here! Take this. And this will dissolve that mucus. Here. Take this medicine and you can get rid of your cough."
And the way Guru Maharaj Ji explains it, that you have this mind. And in this world you have never in your whole life taken care of this life. And the reason why you, you experience this unsatisfaction, the reason why you experience this "cough," is because your body, your true self wants to get rid of this mind. And mind is like the mucus.
So Guru Maharaj Ji says, "Here. This is the medicine of the Holy Word. This is the medicine of the Holy Name. This is the medicine of the Holy Knowledge. You can, in fact, get rid of that mucus, get rid of that mind."
And Guru Maharaj Ji says, "To help it along, to help that medicine along, to just keep it really nice for you and so that you will be able to get rid of your symptoms sooner, get rid of your problem sooner, refrain from total indulgence into this world. Don't eat everything that you see. Only eat satsang. Don't do whatever you feel like doing -- 'you should rest.' Only do service. And this will cure you."
And we say, "Guru Maharaj Ji, thank you. Okay. Great, man. I have the medicine."
The Grass is Always Greener
And I know that in that darshan line, when the new premies were coming together [There had been a Knowledge Session at the festival], it was such a strong experience. It was such a beautiful experience, because they had really been waiting and waiting for such a long time, listening to satsang, doing service, and still, you know, never being able to come through the darshan line because the real experience: no connection yet. Not yet a devotee because they hadn't got the Knowledge. And finally, by Guru Maharaj Ji's Grace you know … and what an incredible place to receive Knowledge, really. What an incredible time to receive Knowledge. Satsang before and satsang after. And nothing else happening. Don't have to rush to your job. Forget it. You don't have to cry tears of joy sitting in your office chair, tears of joy you know. But you can let go and experience. And having the Knowledge the same day and having the dashan line, having darshan the same day: what a wonderful experience to have.
And it was just like when these premies came through, it was like so much love. It was just all gleaming. It had really come true; really happened, really manifested. The experience was real! It was not an experience of, "Okay, I'm glad you have come into this room to receive Knowledge. Here is your mantra. Here is your rosary. This is what you chant all the rest of your life. And when you die, you will eventually get to heaven."
I mean all I can say to the people who say that is, "Well, the way I want it is when I die, you die with me, so in case I don't get to heaven, at least I get to punch you! Break your jaws. Break your head. Because there would have been my whole life wuould have been destroyed! And if I go to heaven, what have you got to worry about? All's great!"
You know, but of course, it would never be that way in that situation. "No, no, no. You do this for the rest of your life. You'll get there. We promise. This is your, this is your ticket to heaven. It says so right there: 'hell' -- I mean, 'heaven.' you know" And its just like we just get so caught up into that whole concept. You know "Here it is. This is your life, kid. Live it!"
But Guru Maharaj Ji's experience of this Knowledge, the experience of the Knowledge that Guru Maharaj Ji reveals, is not like that.
It's instantaneous.
It's right then and right there. It happens (clicks fingers) just like that. Because it isn't doors after doors after doors after doors after doors times of doors. It's one door. And when that door is opened, when the key is given to us, and when the Grace, Guru Maharaj Ji, opens it up, turns the key, unlocks that door, we see that incredible experience manifest.
That experience of Knowledge I mean for me was, "Heaven, eat your heart out. I've got it right here. Maybe people have to die to get there. I'm alive and I'm there. And it's better."
So premies, that's what we have to do is to really listen to Guru Maharaj Ji. What is he trying to say? What has he said to us? How many times has satsang been given? How many times has satsang been given? I mean since, there was a satsang on Saturday. Before that there was a phone feed. Since Sunday till now, there have been two satsangs, two satsangs, two satsangs. And here we are. And we still need more!
Bill [Patterson] came up to me this morning, you know, he was sitting there. I said, "Bill, I can't imagine that this being just the last day of this program and I'm really glad we've got another way, another day" and he goes "But the only thing that I can't understand is why one day?" and I said "Just to extend it one day, you came up to me and said 'What about this and what about that and what about that?' " If we extend it for 30 more days more I don't know what you're going to do, you know (Shouting).
And so, premies, we have to open up our doors. We have to really listen to Guru Maharaj Ji.
You know, maybe, maybe if we really did continue this program for 30 more days, maybe on the 31st day, which would then be a total of 38 days, something will click. But maybe not. Maybe nothing will happen! (Someone shouts, "Give it a try." cheering) I don't, I don't believe in "Try this and try that." So far Knowledge is concerned, you don't have to try it. It works.
You know Satsang, service and meditation isn't, "Give it a shot, kid. See if it works." Satsang, service and meditation, Guru Maharaj Ji and Guru Maharaj Ji's Grace, Knowledge, isn't like, "Oh yeah, there's only one way to find out." It works. It's sure. Because it is it!
And so what I am trying to say is that we could give our whole lifetimes a try and that's what Guru Maharaj Ji is saying. When we can't even give our whole lifetime to it, what's going to happen in 38 days? Absolutely zilch. I know what will happen in 38 days. I know. Our sewage system is going to overflow. We won't have enough food. You know and it's going to get colder and colder and colder, probably rain, you know and I mean it's going to become like a mad house!
But what Guru Maharaj Ji is trying to say is that, "Look. If you keep parallel to your mind, then it might take a whole lifetime."
Guru Maharaj Ji's saying, "Do it now." So when we come to festivals, when we go through darshan line, it isn't this little thing up there [in our head] fidgeting around with us, but there's just us and Guru Maharaj Ji. Nothing else. No mind to bother about. Nothing to bother about. It'd make it even a hundred times, hundred times even more beautiful of an experience. And it can be done. It can happen!
Maharaji Fanasizes About Purchasing Land and Having a City
I know that, for me, it would be so incredible if we had a city. You know, and we were talking about it the other day. It was really funny. Here we have a place. We buy this huge piece of land. Huge. And by the, by the way I heard a rumour, premies were passig around a rumour that there was a rumour that the land was going to be purchased near Gainesville. Have you heard that rumour? (laughter, passes hand across throat) Bad grapeviine. Scratch that one. That's not true. Cause you have a million to one chance, it might happen if you'd like to try it. But that's not where its going to be. Actually, I don't know where its going to be and I know that uh hopefully it'll be all over the world, someday. Guru Maharaji's grace and I mean right now we are, we are staying on a property that's 172 acres. And it's not big enough. We want more!
And we were just talking about that when we have all this land, it'll make it a county! Give it a name. Make it a nice town, nice city. And in this county its mandatory law that we have a sheriff you know. Raja said that he's going to be, he's going to be the sheriff. (laughter) He'll have his sports car with great big lights on it, you know. He'll drive as fast as he wants. Who's going to stop him? He's the sheriff.
And we were talking about this whole thing you know. We were only joking around. And just I said, "Yeah, and all throughout the county, instead of having regular speed signs, we would have digital speed signs. And all that would be controlled, you know the stop lights and everything would be controlled from the Treasury Department. As soon as they see you know that they're running out of money, they spot the cars on the TV monitors going 75, which is the speed limit, and immediately drop it to 25 and everybody gets a ticket." (laughter) Everybody was laughing you know. Stomachs were hurting. It was really funny. You know, make a, make a light appear green. The guy starts to go through it. Make it go red, you know. "You just ran a stop light!" But anyway, that would be a very dishonest thing to do, really. We wouldn't do that. (Just do it with the speed signs you know.)
But the thing is that we could have a mandatory law in this county that whoever is spotted not in satsang will be arrested and kicked out of the county! And every night there can be a satsang! You know. And instead of having all these radios yapping away, "This is happening. And that guy just did this," and the sheriff would be driving around, Raja Ji would be driving around all over the place making sure there's nobody spacing out. Satsang would be pouring through the car! You know, instead of having all these sirens go, "Wa Wa Wa," you know you'd have "Jai Satchitanand! Jai Satchitanand!" really loud.
Have chuuch bells, you know, church bells for time they have? Well, have these speakers that say, "Bolie Satgurudev Maharaj Ki Jai!" And they say it so many times, for every hour, so you know. We'll have this incredible place. (Bolie Satgurudev Maharaj Ki Jai) And I mean, you don't have an option in this county. If you don't go to satsang, that's it! You get arrested! How wonderful you know. But I seriously doubt, I don't seriously doubt that we'll never have a county like that, but I seriouslt doubt if that that's going to do us any good! Because what is it? Is it imposing something? You see, we, this is what I'm saying. You know it's like talking about a mule. And there is an example, there is a thing, there is a saying. It's not about mules; it's about horses. But with a dumb horse, that's what a mule is, "You can take a horse to water, but you can't make him drink it." No way. Because that effort, that process of drinking, the horse will have to do it all by himself.
Premie Miracle Tales
We come here. It's incredible. Miracles after miracles after miracles happen. You know, there was, I don't know Pill Patterson told me, so I don't know if it's really true or not, but he told me that one of these days there was a couple and they used to always come around here to pick pine cones. And one day they showed up. They wanted to come and pick pine cones. And the showed up and there was this whole thing going on. And they came to the gate and wanted to know, you know, what's up, what was going on you know. And it you know and they started giving them satsang. And they both realized that they had had a dream, just not too long ago that they were going to join a peace movement! And they got completely blissed out! And they heard more satsang and more satsang and more satsang. I don't know if it's true or not cause that's just Bill Patterson, but it's feasible that something like that could happen. (Happened before.) And premies, what an incredible thing. I mean, that's literally telling somebody the ultimate way you could possibly tell, "Go there and receive Knowledge."
And Guru Maharaj Ji is giving us that experience like so many miracles are happening, so many miracles are happening. I mean it's incredible. So many 'magics' are happening; so many miracles are happening. This magician is doing his best and what more proof could you possibly need to convince this dumb mind that, "Man, go take a vacation. I want to be here. I want to be here to do satsang, service and meditation. I want to be here just to be into it. I want to be here to experience what I am experiencing."
And yet how much of that effort is in fact made? How much of that effort is in fact put into that process, like I was talking about: actually drinking the water? None. Sometimes none. It's just like, okay, because it's easy to experience this Knowledge. It's easy to experience satsang, service and meditation. Because you don't have to do anything. It just comes. It just happens.
I mean to a lot of people, you know when you're traveling in an airplane or something like that and they just feel something is happening when you're reading a satsang, you know. I know that a lot of people just maybe sometimes stop by the satsang place and it's like, "Man, it's real! It's real! It's reality!" But then as soon as the time comes to really go out of this, out of that front gate and completely, you know, use that Grace, completely still stay plugged in satsang, service and meditation … I mean here, what option do you have got? You can go for a certain area, away from, you know, this place and you can't help but hear satsang, you know. Because these P.A.'s are pretty powerful and they just carry the sound off. I mean, here you are for that very reason and that's exactly what's happening! And Guru Maharaj Ji gives us that Grace -- really does -- so we can do it, so we can make that little thing happen in our lives, make that experience stay with us, with us all the time.
I mean here it's so incredible. All you have to do is just let go. That's all you have to do. And it is just pouring and pouring and pouring. But, premies, you know, that experience has to be with us all the time; have to become a, you know, just be a, you know, always experiencing the Love and Grace of Guru Maharaj Ji, always experiencing the Love of satsang, service and meditation; the Grace of satsang, service and meditation; the beauty of satsang, service and meditation. Satsang. Such a powerful, such an incredible thing. Service. What a joy! What a joy! You know and meditation. What a reality. What an experience. What a thing! To just take us inside, way, way, way deep inside, where there is nothing but total bliss, total oneness, total calmness.
Where there is that place where, you know, Brahmanand says that, "I've seen a great wonder. I've seen, I've seen a palace that is completely so brilliant. And there is all these lights everywhere, and they're completely so saturating. And a blind man is seeing this and describing it. What a wonder! A blind man is seeing this and describing it" Then he says, "Without anybody playing anything, you know, there is this music that is constantly playing, constantly playing. And it's incredible. And a deaf person hears it and is completely blissed out, completely lost, completely saturated in this incredible music." YOu know and then that, "In the middle of the sky, there is this well. And a lame person climbs down and climbs up and climbs down and climbs up and drinks the nectar dripping from that well. Oh, what a wonder it is!" And Guru Maharaj Ji has shown us that wonder. Guru Maharaj Ji has the power to show us the wonder. Us. But when we come to Guru Maharaj Ji, you know like Krishna says, "Come to the time, go to the Perfect Master of your time, and go like a child." What does he mean by, "Go like a child"?
You know. And I know that sometimes, Wadi, she wants something, or Premlata wants something, or Hansi wants something and its maybe you know like a popsicle you know which they know its real funny you know they theyt if they eat a popsicle all the time they'll never be hungry to eat the real dinner. So they come over and they butter us up. You know. "Oh you know" and they'll come over and kiss you, and do this whole number, this whole number. And they are really trying to be not obvious. And I mean, youknow, they're really trying too hard! And it's obvious what they're trying to do.
And once they have sweet-talked you into it, once, as soon as they find out, yes, you're starting to give, Wadi will go, "Mommy! Mommy! Do you think I could … do you think that I could have a … popsicle?" You know, this really sweet way. As soon as you say, "Yeah," that's it. You just left, you just left your center of gravity and you're falling for it everywhere. You know, "You think I could have it?" And then -- how can you --? You know, it's so sweet. It's beautiful!
So does he mean it like that? You know, here an intention is already there and you go up to Guru Maharaj Ji. "Oh Guru Maharaj Ji, you know --" sweet-talk him into it and say, "Oh, could you just please slip me a little bit of Knowledge -- Oh, Perfect Master -- to try it out, to find out?" But rather the opposite way, absolutely the opposite way.
You know when when Hansi, when you go up to Hansi or Premlata or Navi you know and you go, "Wadi, You know what?" or, "Do you know about something?" and they say, "No. No." When we say, "No," we are always thinking: "brrrrrrrrr" you know our computer is just going, going you know 3000 baud; just "brrrrrrrrrt," flying, literally. We go, "No. What is it?" But when they say "No", their computers are not going 3000 baud, 5000 or 50,000 baud. It's just, "No. I don't know. Tell me! Tell me! You knmow, I want to know!" And when you tell them, their heart is so open. Like, you know Hansi sometimes really gets into his power trip, you know gets into his karate thing and he takes his act really hard and he does the full number and one day we were just playing and I just went like "Wowser a Dowser" and that word he never heard of it. But when he accepted that word "Wowser a Dowser" from there on it became a part of his life "Wowser a Dowser" or "Koowowi" you know "Koowowi." So, to what has been taught to us they will accept it without ever doubting, without having a doubt.
OH MY GOD - They Had Questions and Doubts
And that's how he means that "Go to your Perfect Master, go to the Perfect Master of your time and ask him. What he says, accept it in your heart. Don't doubt it. Don't "Why this and why …" I know that there is a lot of people who have read a lot of spiritual books. And they have a lot of questions. More books they have read, more questions they have. The less books they have read, less questions they have. No books they have read, no questions asked. Incredible!
And its like these questions are really intense questions: "How does this whole array of liberation work?" "And what is this whole chakra of this, you know, this kundalini, this chakra that sits here to this place to that place, and by doing this you can open this chakra so that you can open up the realization through the chakras, and open up the top one …" Like some kind of a hydraulic valve job. Or some kind of one of those things that sometimes farmers make where you just drop a ball and the things starts to go down, down, down, hits a lever which starts another things and then it hits the apple that shoots the arrow and goes through a little thing and rings a bell. Then if you want somebody, you know, in your bedroom you pull the string, pull the string and the bell rings and it has to go through this whole procedure. - [? referring to a Rube-Goldberg machine]
And I don't know you, I don't know how what happens with chakras. I never studied all that, never cared to, okay? Whether this chakra has to open before that will open. It's like this whole immaculate electronics. There's one, to me, there's only one valve, and that's mind. Get rid of the valve and it'll all flow. Because Guru Maharaj Ji is all-giving. And all we need is to accept. You know Guru Maharaj Ji has tanks, you know gallons and gallons and gallons, I mean infinite gallons of that Love to bestow upon us. And we have a tank which can hold infinite gallons of that Love.
And so, premies, we can get involved in that mind. We can get involved in those questions: "What is this? What is that? What does this realization have to do with this? If I have my realization, will it make my … I used to get questions like this: "If I have a spiritual realization, will it make my physical appearance better?" "When my, the light always shines inside of me, and I experience it, when I finally realize it, will it start to shine outside of me?" Look, it doesn't matter if it does or if it doesn't, as long as you can experience it.
I know I mean that some of you were there in Prem Nagar, obviously. And what what what those questions were something else! Tthose questions were something else! They'd really get into it, really get into it. And Guru Maharaj Ji says, "Look, come to me with an open heart so that what I tell you, you will accept." And maybe to people it's like, "Listen, man, that'd be completely crazy. Because you could just sweet-talk me into anything."
Doubt after doubt after doubt. So far spirituality is concerned, as far Knowledge is concerned, so far as the Perfect Master is concerned, it's doubt after doubt after doubt after doubt after doubt. So far school is concerned? If we doubt "I don't believe the teacher, I don't believe anything you're saying. I doubt it all," immediately as a result they'll send a note to your parents: "This guy doesn't want to learn." I mean obviously in school it's the same thing. They want you to be completely open up, have no doubt, just accept whatever they are saying! But that's for the worldly knowledge. That's for the knowledge that varies from place to place to place to place.
Part 2
You know. What is a triangle called in Hindi? I don't know. In Hindi it's got a different name. In English it's got a different name. In German it's got a different name. In Spanish it's got a different name. You know. All these knowledges that are completely dependent on where we are, what we are going to do, what we're not going to do, and so on and so forth. And, to grasp that knowledge … You know, if you are of a nice, technical, mechanical background, when you go to the college to study, you know, mechanics it'll be super-simple for you. If you're into electronics, trying to study mechanics, it might not be so easy.
But Guru Maharaj Ji's Knowledge is the same. Everybody grasps it, be it a little kid, be it a big kid, be it a fat person, be it a skinny person. Everybody.
I know that one time there was an article from England that this guy wanted to really become a Bobby, he really wanted to join, become a cop, a policeman in England but he was too tiny. He was too short. So they told him no. So he hung himself and tied weights to himself, to his feet and tried to stretch, stretch, stretch so he could qualify. Guru Maharaj Ji doesn't tell you that go go, "You know, Go stretch a little bit. You're too short to receive Knowledge. You're too tall to receive Knowledge. Go put yourself in a hydraulic press." Guru Maharaj Ji doesn't come up to you and say, "No, you're too overweight." Guru Maharaj Ji doesn't come up to you and say, "You know you're too skinny." What a contrast between Sampuranand and Gwen (laughter) One, He just can't, Sampuranand he just can't sit anywhere, he has to find himself a spot, you know, will permit his occupancy (laughter). That's what exactly happened today, all the premies were sitting right in a line against the wall and right in the front of the and there was a space I guess between all the premies and tried to look for one place and he couldn't fit between there, looked for another one, another one, then finally found one that was big enough and he sat. And you look at Gwen she's halk the size of her sister, you know, and yet Guru Maharaj Ji has given Sampuranand the Knowledge and being as he is, and he has given Gwen Knowledge. But whatever has to be I don't think that Gwen will ever gain weight, whatever has to be, no, you know sometimes you see her standing way off in the distance its hard to look if she's there or not. But what, but I don't think Mahatma Sampuranand Ji can lose any weight, its all there, you know, its all a part of him. (laughter) So what if Guru Maharaj Ji has to say "Mahatma Ji you have to lose 250 pounds" and that'll be the half of him and saw "Gwen, you have to gain 250 pounds" which she could never ldo. The only way she could do it possibly is by carrying actual weights on the outside and going on a scale you know. And Sampuranand Ji couldn't do it unless he tied himself from a rope and slowly slightly suspended himself on the scale. But we care for these two people and I know that you know John Miller I guess is fairly tall but look at Bill Patterson and I know there's a couple of other premies who walked through Darshan Line and John only comes to their shoulder and they're huge. But Guru Maharaj Ji said "Okay, you know, you premies, you know, lose a, lose a, lose a few feet." It'd be so impossible for us.
But Guru Maharaj Ji has no discrimination. What nationality you are? Could be anything. What color you are? You could be anything. What creed you are? You could be anything. What you have been following? Could be anything. Just come to Guru Maharaj Ji with an open heart. That's the only requirement he says he has. And the Knowledge shall be given. Knowledge shall be opened in their hearts.
So we really have to open up to that real reality. We have to open up to that really real Truth. Because if we don't, how many centuries have we been lost and still for how many centuries are we going to stay lost? It's hard to say. It's hard to tell.
Just to have that faith in Guru Maharaj Ji. That's all. That's all. What a wonderful thing. You know Hansi, for instance, this happens a lot. There is Hansi, you know, he'll be walking, up in the trailer, doing his own thing, whatever it is, and then all of a sudden, you know, as soon as he hold your hand he will let go and starts going around you know and you've got his hand and that's it, that's all he cares, that somebody is holding him and just lets go and there he is just trying to swing around 360 degrees or he just lets, you know, falls over and then youll go "Hansi, what are you doing? Get up you know." And that's all Guru Maharaj Ji is saying, "Just let me hold your hand just once and I'll take you." "At least come to me," Guru Maharaj Ji says, "And I'll take you in my lap. I'll give you that affection that nobody in this world can. I'll give you the satisfaction that nobody in this world can. And it's for you." And look how simple that would be for us. Incredibly simple. I mean, incredibly, incredibly, incredibly simple. And yet that strong mind just won't let go, just won't let go. You know. And that's all that has to happen.
Let go at Guru Maharaj Ji's feet. Just let go at Guru Maharaj Ji's World and what do you have to bother about? Get on Guru Maharaj Ji's boat and keep your focus on Guru Maharaj Ji and what can make you sick? There's nothing! Somebody can puke at your face and it still won't make you sick. Because you are with Guru Maharaj Ji. Mind can come and really slap you right on your face, and you won't feel it. And it is true. It is true the way it is. It's really real the way it is. And there is only one way. There are no two ways around it! You have to surrender. You have to let go for the manifestation of that Knowledge to be real for you. And you don't have to surrender to mind, you don't have to surrender to maya, you don't have to surrender to illusion. You have to surrender to Guru Maharaj Ji, period!
And that effort has to be made by you. You have to do that actual process yourself, as an individual. You just can't say, "Oh yeah, four of us can come together and we can have better satsang." Doesn't work that way. How it works is when the experience really manifests, then you tell about it. Then you let go of that experience. And for the people, when their experience really manifests, then they open up and look at that, let that experience in. But five or six or ten or twenty people can get together: that's not going to make satsang any better.
I know last Saturday when I was giving satsang, it was such an incredible joy. It was such an incredible bliss. It was such an incredible thing happening! And it didn't get any better that all the premies, you know, finally got here! Because I was experiencing at that time … It wasn't like okay at that time, "Because all the premies aren't here your experience is going to be a little bit too shy." But it wasn't. It was incredible. Experience is experience.
And as I have said before, we are all individuals in this world. Every one of us. And that is why we have to try as hard as we can. There is no link system. It's just us and Guru Maharaj Ji. To me, that's not a negative way to look at it. There is no negative way to look at it. It's even more beautiful that in this world there is no two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten people. It's just you and your Guru Maharaj Ji. I mean, what can be more incredible than that? Just you and your Guru Maharaj Ji; that's it in this whole world. It's been such an experience. It's been such an incredible experience.
And premies, I sincerely hope that you make that effort; drink, swallow, get that Adam's apple going. Kick out that mind. Just really make that little effort. Because Guru Maharaj Ji wants you to make that effort. And premies, I don't know when we'll meet again, I sure hope we do and soon, all of us, its possible and I know that you know, certain premies have to leave tonight. There's this flight going and that flight going, a bus going here and a bus going there. Well, my blessings to all those premies who have to leave. And, you know, make your effort. You're individuals. Make your effort. And I hope I'll see you really soon.
And for people who are going to be staying here tomorrow, make your effort. It doesn't mean because you're going to be here on Sunday that you can get away with it! I'd say, try harder. Everybody. Try harder. And what fantastic Grace. What fantastic opportunity. Here we are. One reason. One purpose. Satsang, service, meditation. Darshan, Grace, Love. And I mean, it's just so beautiful. You know, even to have that little procession … it was the first time that a procession like that ever really has happened in the West. And it was so beautiful. It felt so good seeing all the premies. And maybe, you know, we will hold a program, more brothers and sisters will be here, more premies will be here. We can have a longer one. Then we take it through a major town. You know maybe it will be possible, someday. But forget about those "somedays." Now. Satsang, service, meditation. So premies, thank you very much.
(Bolie Shri Satgurudev Maharaj Ki Ji
Bolie Shri Satgurudev Maharaj Ki Ji
Bolie Shri Satgurudev Maharaj Ki Ji
and so on and so forth)
Now that the speech was over there were songs and these songs showed very clearly that most of Maharaji's talk about Knowledge and effort and meditation are like a magician's misdirection. In 1978 Divine Light Mission was not a meditation cult (if it ever had been) is now a complete cult of personality worshipping Guru Maharaj Ji which was also highlighted by the inane responses of the crowd to Maharaji's "playing" with them at the ends of his speeches.
Kim O'Leary sang very well considering how late it was and how many hours she had sat around waiting. I don't know what the title might be.
I'd like to thank you now
For all you've done
For having faith in me
When mine was gone
The way you look to see
The best in me
I felt your presence start to move me
Like waves that break across the shore
Now you are everything that my heart is beating for
I haven't known you long
But you've shown me
I've watched you take good care
Of all my needs
No matter where I go
You're all I see
I always thought I knew what love was
But loving you is so much more
How can I have my doubts
When I know your love is pure
Oh my Lord
You are everything my heart is beating for
This is possibly the best live copy of Arti I have. Somebody is keeping time with a resounding thwack every second beat.

I had no copy of this next song and am not sure if it was released on any of the One Foundation albums. Ross Hannaford sings lead. It sounds like that they have a few good extra singers on stage. There's certainly more harmonies than One Foundation usually have. The song lyrics and chords were published in the Divine Times of May 1978 in an article about Holi in Miami.
THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING (3:50)
Medium Waltz Tempo
Guru Maharaj Ji, thank you for everything,
For teaching my heart to sing, and showing me Light.
I'm in your world now.
No one can do me harm.
Don't want to leave your arms anymore.
It's you I a-dore.
MIDDLE:
You are my guide, lover inside,
And you show me what I need to know.
When I am still, my heart you fill.
Oh, Maha-raj Ji, say you will
Love me for-ever.
Don't let me stray from your sight.
Loving you keeps me right where I want to be.
It's all that I need.
(REPEAT MIDDLE)
Love me for-ever.
Don't let me stray from your sight.
Loving you keeps me right where I want to be.
I'm in your world now.
No one can do me harm.
Don't want to leave your arms any-more.
It's you I a-dore.
You I a-dore.
You I a-dore
You are my guide
How can I have my doubts
When I know your love is pure
You are everything that my heart is beating for
With the vocals down in the mix, this is the best version of this execrable song I have heard. And I love the flute.
Dance, Dance, Dance by Rich Neel with One Foundation
Maharaj Ji you are the Lord
You've shown us by your Word
You've taken us from darkness to Light
Your wish is our delight
But now because we love your precious Form
There's one more miracle we ask you to perform
Will you dance, dance, dance
Our hearts long to see you dance
It seems we've waited for ages
Turned countless pages
We can't wait much longer
The music's getting stronger
So please dance, dance, dance
Our hearts long to see you dance
When your feet move the mind shakes
The world in our soul wakes
We can dance on for ever
Nothing else matters
So please dance, dance, dance
Maharaj Ji gather us in your dance
How grateful we are for your Lotus Feet
It's brought us Divine Nectar so sweet
Your breath is the life of all mankind
Without you we are completely blind
Your presence sends our hearts out of control
Please Maharaj Ji our souls are your dance floor
So please dance, dance, dance
Our hearts long to see you dance
Our hearts long to see you dance
It seems we've waited for ages
Turned countless pages
We can't wait much longer
The music's getting stronger
So please dance, dance, dance
Our hearts long to see you dance

It ends with a brief bit of Power of Love with ragged singing but a few powerful guitar licks
