Prem Rawat's Teachings about the Divine Light - In His Own Words
When Prem Rawat, or Maharaji ("the Ultimate Ruler") as he calls himself or Guru Maharaj Ji as he was called when he first came to the West, he spruiked his Knowledge as the method to achieve God realization through his empowered techniques of meditation. Until the late 1980's when he altered many of his teachings including the actual techniques of meditation he also preached the importance of trying to constantly meditate using his Holy Name technique and claimed that he did it 24 hours a day. However there was a reason he called his organisation Divine Light Mission and that was the primary importance of the Divine Light. Meditation is basically boring, silently repeating a mantra interminably, concentrating on your breathing, trying to solve an insoluble koan … boring. But Divine Light - "brighter than a thousand suns" - was touted as being spectacular, colourful, intense and exciting. It could be seen instantly once you were initiated - there were no decades of meditating in caves or lifelong servitude to some swami required. This sounded like a good chance to see a divine light show and maybe if you'd been reincarnated as a particularly saintly soul and diligently applied yourself to squeezing your eyeballs you could even one day see the guru himself, the Lord of the Universe, inside that divine light, imprinted on your eyeballs permanently.
Shri Maharaj Ji, Delhi, India, August 7 1952
… can any professors or teachers tell you how to use the rosary of the mind? It is comprised of the Mahamantra, which is "the Name which has neither beginning nor ending."
Nobody can attain liberation without knowing the true and Holy Name. …
St. Kabir says that whatever is done without the guidance of Guru, goes astray. …
Guru Nanak writes, in the Granth Saheb that nobody should be mistaken, because one cannot get liberation without a Guru. All the prophets, Guru Nanak, St. Tulsidas, Lord Jesus
Christ, Lord Krishna preached about the Holy Name and Divine Light and told the public that this is the only way of getting peace and happiness. It cannot be attained by any other means. One can get relief from miseries by
meditation and attain happiness. Ultimately he can attain God's Light. So the Name is the only way to lead one to liberation. …
But all saints have remembered the Name. All saints and Vedas speak with one voice, that you should have love for the Holy Name. So the best act is to meditate on the Holy Name. By the Holy Name, your body will become
fruitful, your spirit will be pleased, you will be free from the cycle of regeneration, and you will get liberation. You cannot get such a fate by reading scriptures. When you will remember the Name and meditate on the
Divine Light while alive, you will merge with it after death.

"I prostrate before the Master who is God in human form, whose words are like the sun in eradicating the darkness of delusion". So-called gurus nowadays bestow a rosary or teach some words or a verse of a scripture to their disciples and tell them to remember it as the True Name of God and people accept such gurus as real Masters. But St. Tulsidas says that such gurus are not true Spiritual Masters. Only the one who wipes out darkness and kindles the Divine Light within the heart is the true Spiritual Master. 'Gu' means darkness and 'ru' means light. The Word of the Master is as powerful as the sun. Darkness goes away immediately when the sun rises. Similarly the Word of the Master removes the ignorance of lust and attachment and wipes out sins.

Mohammed would have been asked what was his religion by the people of his time. Do you think that he would have replied that his religion was Islam? Likewise, people would have asked Jesus Christ about his religion and do
you think that he would have named Christianity as his religion? Would Lord Buddha have said that his religion was Buddhism? What is that religion which they all followed themselves and which they spread for the sake of all
mankind? … In fact, we all are sons and daughters of one
and the same Almighty Father. We should love, respect and serve each other. You know that Jesus Christ imparted the knowledge of Divine Light and Holy Name. He also healed sick people, gave bread to hungry people and money
to poor people. Today people believe in Jesus Christ, they spread Christianity but they do not know the Knowledge which he imparted to his disciples.

Since Divine Light is seen within and the Holy Name is known within, their realization gives a person complete understanding, of the source of life itself. The entire universe emanates from this source and so by knowing
that all is known. The result is constant and unchanging peace and happiness and the deathless state of self-realization achieved. It is the time that world leaders try to spread this Knowledge if they really wish for
peace. The individual should concentrate his mind if he wants to achieve the highest aim in life. This is the only way to integral peace and happiness.

Shri Hans Ji Maharaj (Prem Rawat's Father) The Essence Of Life Is Rembering Holy Name (shabd)
Kabir sumiran saar hai, aur sakal janjal. Simran - Remembrance of Holy Name is the essence of human life.
I am of the opinion that remembrance of the Holy Name of God and meditation on the Divine Light only will do you good.
So, everyone should take advantage of the opportunity of this human life by acquiring the knowledge of Holy Name and Divine Light.
This is the religion for all mankind. This is the Light, which is beyond moon and sun and this is the true and easy method to concentrate the mind. The purpose of human life is to acquire the highest peace, that is, salvation. God is truth, consciousness and bliss and is one and the same for all. So there can be only one religion or one path for all mankind.

Lord Krishna said," Attain this Knowledge by all means. If you prostrate yourself at the feet of the tatwadarshi (seer or enlightened soul), serve him in every way and ask him sincerely for this Knowledge, when he is pleased he will impart it to you." This is the only way of getting that knowledge. There is absolutely no other way. But the problem is how to recognize the enlightened Guru? The word 'Guru' means 'the person who can show the Light within'. The term 'gu' stands for darkness and 'ru' means light. Hence, one who can show self-effulgent Light within you, and thereby instantaneously remove the darkness, should be taken as the real tatwadarshi guru. Thus we see that the only way of bringing about an improvement in human behaviour is the acquisition of this true Knowledge with the help of a living realized soul. The aims of human life - unalloyed happiness, deliverance from all suffering and salvation from the bondage of death and rebirth - can be attained by immersing the mind in the Divine Light and constantly meditating on the Real Name. Non-stop meditation on the Name gives mental equanimity, stability, tranquillity and complete concentration which in turn brings true peace.

Discourse - Param Sant Sadgurudev Shri Hans Ji Maharaj (Prem Rawat's father and Perfect Master of His time)
To remember the Holy Name of God is the only essence in this world. That Name was one in the beginning, now also it is one and after the creation comes to an end, it will remain the same. That 'Name' is true since time immemorial. All other names given by people are false. All incarnations, Masters, Saints and devotees who came into this world, imparted the Knowledge of the True Name and Divine Light to sincere seekers, but this world is such that people ignore the present Divine Masters and after they are gone, celebrate their birthdays without knowing the depths of Spiritual Knowledge, and think that this is all that has to be done for salvation. They are not concerned in the least with what our great Incarnations talked about and taught the devotees of their time.

Truth can be realized and peace established by the realization of Divine Light and the Holy Name of God, but this is only possible through the help and guidance of the Satguru of the time and by no other means whatsoever. … Permanent peace can be achieved when lust, greed, hatred and fear are overcome by people en-masse. But this is only possible by the control and concentration of mind. Only Knowledge of God's Holy Name and realization of Divine Light enables man to gain the concentration necessary to achieve eternal bliss.

Visualisation of Divine Light and the knowledge of the real name of the Almighty God cannot be acquired by study of books, performance of penance,
sacrifices or rituals or by counting of beads. It is acquired with the personal contact and with the help of the realized soul - SAD-GURU of the time
only. A candle cannot be burnt by recital of its burning formulas nor can it be burnt by its contact with any extinguished light.
It can be burnt by its physical contact with a burning light only. Similarly visualisation of Divine Light and Knowledge of His real Name
is acquired by the personal contact contact with and aid of the living realizED SOUL - SADGURU only.

Knowledge of the soul cannot be attained simply by reading the holy books. It is only a living spark that can give us light. The truth can only be imparted to us from the living spiritual Master. … Guru and God are one and the same entity. One is given form while the other is formless. "I and my father are one." (John, 10; 30) Thus, the knowledge of the self can be attained only at the feet of a living spiritual master. … The Divine Light has been variously named by different spiritual masters. It is called Elahi Noor in the Koran, Chandna in the Guru Granth Saheb, Noor by saint Kabir, Bhargo in the Vedas, Param Prakash in the Ramayana and Divya Jyoti in the Upanisads. It is possible for every man to experience this Divine Light through the grace of the living master. This light is but the radiance of our own true inner essence. It is the true responsibility of man to know this light, to experience God and become one with his maker. For it is man's function to find God. Without this knowledge man is but an animal in human form. … It is possible for every man to experience this Divine Light through the grace of the living master.

you don't know where God is. God wants to test us, so He keeps Himself hidden. Although He's there all the time, we don't see Him. But we can see Him. If we try to see God through Knowledge, then we can see Him. But if we try to see Him through worldly connections then we can't see Him. Because God is Light. So when we meditate on Light then we can see Him. But when we open our eyes we don't see Him. We can't see Him, because, as it's said, even the light of a thousand suns can't be compared with His Light. Only the Holy Name can reveal Divine Light. It's Holy Name which makes you eat, it's love which makes you eat, it's love which makes you dance. Life is love. Everything is love.

Similarly, in order to be with the Lord, one has to become a humble servant in the beginning. You, in the western world, are crippled with materialism. Come to me, for I shall heal you from your disease. You are blind with your eyes, for you cannot look to the spiritual world. Come to me, for I shall enlighten you. If you are lame, I am there to help you.
Dear aspirant, day by day, man is exploring materialism. But the saints had explored in the spiritual world. Scientists write books and theories while the saints write scriptures and sing the glory of God. Love God for He is Love. See divine light for He is DIVINE LIGHT. And Sing His glory in words, for He is the WORD. Quench your thirst for He is TRANQUILITY. Listen to the heavenly harmony for He is HEAVENLY HARMONY: from which the universal frame began.

And so, I will finish off, and I have made some mistakes and I beg your pardon for them

And this Knowledge is so Holy, so Perfect that one spark that comes out of this Knowledge is so perfect, so, so perfect, wherever it goes it hits,
it makes it perfect and wherever it goes, again hits, it makes it perfect. Wherever just one spark of this Knowledge shines up, absolutely perfect. So that Knowledge I'm, I've got it here. … This Knowledge, because it is a very sweet fruit, whoever takes a bite feels the sweet and wants to take it more and more. When they met Satguru, in a matter of only a couple of hours they got that God whom they never got for forty years. It was completed, it was done, it was finished; it was perfect in a couple of hours only.
So that is why there is a great, great need for Satguru to be in this world spreading the Holy Word of God. There it is written; Satguru is the bestower of Divine Light and practical knowledge of Holy Name. He bestows it, He gives it openheartedly. Here you may see His kindness, here you may realize His kindness, how kind He is towards the human being. Man, who has been performing sins throughout his life - since he was created - he had been performing sin and he was guilty of himself. Right? And for every sin he was doing, so many miles he was being separated from God. How kind Satguru is that in a matter of hours He removed all the sin and brought us to God. Just He revealed to us what God is.

So, our mind is very, very subtle, very, very thin. So this can only be conquered by those instruments which are spoken
within us. That is, you cannot see the Divine Light with these eyes. You can only see the Divine Light with the third
operation. That is the instrument, that is the operation. You cannot speak the Word, like you cannot speak the mind.
That is the instrument to cut the mind. Now it is absolutely cleared away, done, completely finished. Once the mind is finished, the man is perfect and pure. Man is far-out. The man is completed. The surgery has been completed. The man has been made pure. So, we should try to find out that knowledge - now I am speaking for those people who haven't received this knowledge yet. Find it out through meeting satguru. Because only through the real satguru will you be able to realize this knowledge because he is the possessor of that knowledge.

Even 10,000 times more far out experience you get when you are divinely blissed with the Knowledge. Then
Knowledge just takes you, and takes you into an environment never thought of; never thought of, beautiful. When one
can really get into the Music, get into the Word, get into the Light, it's so beautiful; so blissful. Just grand, you know!
When someone has mastered it, really very far out! So that's what I tell premies: "Meditate, and get somewhere." Yes?

Jesus came into this world and gave this Knowledge to people. Mohammed came into this world and gave this Knowledge to people. Krishna gave this Knowledge to people. Ram gave this Knowledge to people. But now we must look
for a living Master to show us the Light once again. Because the sun comes and goes away and we don't look for the light of the sun which has just gone. We look for the new rising sun. The sun is the same but it
rises in a new way, in a new, beautiful way and we look for that. In the same way, God is the same, but now we must look for His coming and for His Knowledge.

If we can also get to that point of elevation where there is no obstruction between us and that perfect Light we will always, always be able to see it. It will always be shining. But it is within inside of us. If we
have a camera and we try to put the film reel outside the camera, it won't work. It must be put inside the camera and it must be closed. It must be locked inside it. So this Knowledge is within inside us and if we
don't look in, we won't be able to find it.

So what is this thing that makes us alive? What is it?
Doctors have been trying to search for this thing for years and years and years. They have never been able to find it. The day they will find this thing, they will be able to make a dead man alive. But they are still searching. Really it is right inside of us, but how to know it? How to understand that which is the nearest thing to us? The retinas of our eyes with which we see are the nearest parts to our eyes. But can we see our retinas without a mirror? Can we see our face without a mirror? Can we see the tip of our noses without a mirror? And they are the nearest parts, very near parts to us. Can we see them? Can we see the tip of our nose, our eyelids, without a mirror? No. In the same way the nearest thing to us, this energy, cannot be seen without a mirror. But which mirror should we apply? Not these materialistic mirrors, but the mirror of Knowledge, the mirror of enlightenment, is the only mirror which can lead us to this light, which can lead us to this energy.

TW: You are described as the 'bringer of peace to the world'. How are you going to do that?
GMJ: As a matter of fact, I am doing that right now. Around the world this peace is being given to people. Peace is within inside of us. It's a realization that's within inside of us which we have to be revealed. We do not know it. In this human body, inside us, there is this light, there is this peace, but we do not know, because nobody has revealed us that. And I'm revealing this secrecy, I'm revealing this peace to human beings.

You see, what I want to accomplish, or what I want to bring down onto the earth, is peace. Is seeing Divine Light the end goal of your Knowledge or just the beginning?
The point is, if I say that I own a Mercedes, someone can think I mean I own a 200-D, which is a very cheap car, right? Yet I might be owning a Mercedes 600 which costs about $15,000. If I say "sun," you can understand, because you can see the light of the sun. And when I say "Light," you at once think of the light you see daily. We always compare everything with whatever practical, experience we have of life. If somebody says, "I saw a tall man," you will probably try to imagine if he was as tall as the big fellow you saw or not. The point is that in talking of Light we just use the terminology "light" because there isn't any other terminology, and we don't want to just sit here and not talk about the experience we have gained. But actually this is an infinite experience and not like the light of the sun. So the point is that if you want to see God, if you want to be one with God, you will have to be as big as God is.

If you want real satisfaction, then it is the mind that has to be conquered; it is the mind that has to be satisfied.
And the means to do this is by using a special Knowledge, a special way, a special system. And this is the system that has been described by all the saints. A thousand
suns may rise and there will still be darkness. Man will still be in frustration; man will still know, but when a man finds the Guru then he will have the eternal Light.
Three kinds of light-sun, moon, and fire-can be seen by everybody. Pigs, dogs, donkeys, and men, they can all see these three lights, but the Divine Light is the fourth
light and only human beings can see this, and only those human beings who go to the Master and ask to be shown it (Guru Maharaj Ji, 1972)

And it is just by concentrating this mind upon that perfect - and it's not hard, because it is within inside of you. And it's very easy to concentrate. It's like, all Perfect Masters have written about this Knowledge. This is really interesting, because see, Jesus came. He came in Middle East. Krishna came. He came in India. Ram came. He came in India. And all these Masters came. But still they say the same exact thing! They say about the Word. They say about the Light. They say about that far out Knowledge that is all within inside of us, that something to understand, that something that we call. That little something. What is that little something?

In this Knowledge you can get to a point where you open your eyes, and you see nothing except Light; all you hear is Music; all you can feel is the Word vibrating; all you can drink at

beautiful.

There is a glorious sun, not the sun that you see in the sky, but a sun which is within ourselves, and which is much brighter, much, much, much brighter than the sun you see in the sky.
The point of perfection is just all lighted up and waiting for us. We just go in there, peek our heads in there, and see it. It's just light and light and light and light and light and light and light.
Sayings Of Guru Maharaj Ji

Nepal, May 2 1975
As Mahatma Sampuranand told you, if even a thousand suns shone in the sky, their light could not compare with that Light inside. What is that Light which is called the Supreme Abode? What is that Knowledge? Brahmanand Ji said that there is a well in the middle of the sky from which delicious Nectar flows. A lame man climbs there without any ladder. Now, how can we think about this? What is this Knowledge? We cannot figure it out. But if we receive this Knowledge, we can experience it in a moment. Therefore, I have come here to offer you this Knowledge. It is not something that I give from my side. It is already within you. I only want to show this Knowledge to you. What is this Knowledge? It is priceless. This Knowledge can be practiced while you are sleeping, awake, all of the time. So instead of thinking about what this Knowledge will be, whether it is a rosary or mantra, don't waste your time thinking about it, receive it …

And that is why nobody on this earth right now is experiencing that beautiful miracle. … We look for so many miracles, we look for so many things. I was saying at one of these programs that if all of a sudden, somebody pulls out a dove from his sleeve, that's a miracle. "Oh wow, he's a great magician!" To me, all those magic tricks, they're okay, they're good, but they're nothing compared to what this magic trick is, what this miracle is. This is completely fascinating. There's everything here. It's just that we really haven't seen it in its true form. How can we blame it? It's our fault. We haven't experienced it in its true form. But by the grace, by the process of satsang, service, and meditation, we are helped to see this light, to see this beautiful, beautiful life.

And Krishna says, "No. There is one more place." And he says, "There is one more place from where, once you get, you don't return. And in that place, the Light is so incredible that even thousands and thousands and thousands of suns put together cannot equal the Light. And that, Arjun, is my abode. That's where I live. That's me. Constant." And it's so obvious that when we have to see that Divine Light which Krishna talks about, that Divine Light is not visible by these eyes. Why? It's so simple. You can't even look at one sun. (I mean, it's hard enough to look at these lights (stage lights). Your iris freaks out and then your muscles freak out. Your iris closes all the way up. And then your muscles try to close your eyelids. It's a natural reaction.) So what is going to happen in our lives? One day we are going to have that incredible experience (according to Gita) and there's going to be a hundred thousand suns and we are going to have our eyes shut? That doesn't make sense to me. No. Because that's not the way it is. And I'm not talking about a concept. I'm saying there's a third eye, which is our inner self. (And it's not a third eye like a monstrous third eye. A lot of people paint a third eye. You can get these suction-cup eyes, and you put them on: third eye. Automatically that's the reaction to "third eye." But it's an experience.) One saint says that everything you can see with these two eyes is all maya, is all an illusion. But when we go beyond the process of this world, when we go beyond the process of this illusion, when we go beyond the point of this world, only then can we open up to that perfectness. Only then can we have that experience.

And in that Gita at that point it gives a description of Krishna showing Arjun this Divine Light. He says, "O Arjun, what you see with your two eyes is not what the reality really is!"
Arjun goes, "What are you talking about? I can see you!" He said, "That's not really me, though! I give you this other eye. I give you this Divine Eye. I give you this Third Eye through which you really see my form." And this is the thing. This is incredible. So there are all these people standing there. And all they can see is that Krishna is sitting there and Arjuna's there. And they're both mumbling, talking. I mean, probably there were even people who couldn't see that they were talking. …
And Krishna then reveals his form. Nobody budges. Nothing happens. Krishna is showing his Divine Form -- what Krishna really is. Krishna reveals to Arjun what that reality really is.

What does Guru Maharaj Ji mean? Guru -- the revealer of Light. Gu -- darkness; ru -- Light. One who takes us away from the darkness and brings us to Light is "Gu-ru." Guru Maharaj -- maha: the ultimate,
raj: the ruler. The ultimate ruler. Guru Maharaj. And Ji is like the expression "sir."
Guru Maharaj Ji will only be called Guru Maharaj Ji, Guru Maharaj Ji will be only called Guru Maharaj Ji, when he actually does what the word says: reveals the Light and takes away the darkness. Only then. And can you sincerely call Guru Maharaj Ji, Guru Maharaj Ji? Before that it's not Guru Maharaj Ji. It just isn't. And when that reality becomes real, Guru Maharaj Ji becomes real. But when you can in fact say Guru Maharaj Ji and it is right, it's because something has happened to you. You have been taken away from that darkness. And the Light has been shown to you. In yourself. And then the one who has done it is automatically Guru Maharaj Ji! And premies, Guru Maharaj Ji comes into this world, every time. Jesus came. Mohammed came. Guru Nanak came. Shri Maharaj Ji came. Guru Maharaj Ji. For his devotees, everything.

A lot of people have asked that question over a period of time, "Are you perfect? Are you the Perfect Master? Are you perfect?" There is a vast, vast difference in those questions. Perfect is one thing. The body cannot be perfect. Anything that was created once, anything that had a beginning, anything that once was not, is stamped imperfect and shall never be perfect. Ever. But only that Knowledge is perfect. And the one who can teach us, one who can guide us, is the Perfect Master, the perfect guide, the perfect teacher. And that's what we need in our lives. We need somebody to show us the Light.

Guru Maharaj Ji doesn't just come and say, "Hey, everybody! Here is the Truth. Here is the Love. Here is the Peace. Here is your God." Guru Maharaj Ji comes in this world for just such a reason. He doesn't say, "Listen. I'm going to reveal you the God described in the Koran. I'm going to reveal you the God described in Gita. I'm going to reveal you the God described in the Bible." No. Never. "I'm going to reveal you the Truth. I'm going to reveal you the Knowledge. I am going to reveal you the Noor Elahi, the Divine Light, the Bhargo, Divya Prakash." Unanimously. You see it becomes very simple, for somebody who was alive at the time of Jesus Christ did not need no miracle nor no proof nor no pastor nor no religious leader, nobody, nobody, you know that there was Jesus and Christ, well the Christ part only those knew that who had that experience. They saw that he could with what he had to offer and what he had to give through what ever that we now know to be as a miracle could save, could take us from darkness into light. What does that mean? Well? Or let's put it the other way, could show us that stream, that treasure, that well in which lied that incredible pleasure, that incredible joy of the life itself. Showed us or showed those people that thing that is termed as Divine Light. A light that is not ordinary and not simple, not a bulb, not a candle but something truly divine and it these are not things that I'm just making up here, these are things that you read in Bible here and there, a little quote "the Divine Light" or "the Light" or the thing that people saw.

Because the burden of this world is very heavy, very big. I mean, the burden of these problems can crush anyone, however great he may be. I mean, nobody can escape from it. The burden is bound to come. There is no one living who won't feel its weight on his shoulders -- the burden of day-to-day problems. So it is possible that people may feel and realize that there is a burden on their shoulders but there is such a place within inside where there is no burden, where I am really free. There is ecstasy, there is Knowledge, there is light and such a beautiful dawn that is beyond description. So, dear gentlemen, that grace is also being bestowed upon you. Accept it with your open heart and remain worthy of this grace. Then you will have a storehouse of perpetual joy throughout your life!
