Prem Rawat's Teachings about the Purpose and Aim of Life - In His Own Words

Prem Rawat or Maharaji (Ultimate Ruler) as he calls himself taught that the reason for the confusion and unhappiness in the world was that people did not know the aim or purpose of human life. This purpose was quite simple: they should accept him as their Master and Saviour, have faith in him as the embodiment, manifestation and Incarnation of God, surrender their lives to him, practise satsang, service and meditation and beg him for his grace and worship him because that is what the Creator intended.

Maharaji Teaching About the Purpose of Life

"Peace Bomb" speech, 8 November, 1970 in front of 1 million people at India Gate, Delhi
But what is the purpose of this human life? It is to know something more than this - it is to know God. By obtaining the human body, you can receive Knowledge and meditate on God, and this is the unique purpose. There is one famous poem in which the poet expresses his feelings in very simple words. Which is the blessed home, he asks. That home where there is talk about God. Which ears are blessed? Those that hear words about God. Which eyes are blessed? Those that have the darshan of Guru Maharaj Ji. Which foreheads are blessed? Those that bow down to Guru Maharaj Ji. … So, dear premies, receive this Knowledge, and those who have received this Knowledge must meditate and have Guru Maharaj Ji's darshan. He who learns to love Guru Maharaj Ji, Guru Maharaj Ji gives him peace.

Now, I meant to say this, that Guru is that true Almighty Power who makes us see God face to face. That action is your goal. So I say, "Don't believe in Krishna, don't believe in Ram, don't believe in anyone. See God face to face. That's all. This is the aim of your life."

We all have this human body, and there is a particular aim, there is a particular purpose why God has made us so comfortable with this body. And unless and until man has realized his purpose, why he has been sent forth into this world, he has not completed his aim, or his purpose in this world.

Many premies even think it's a very spiritual thing to think, "Why was this world created?" To tell you the truth, you didn't create it, and it's none of your business. Somebody created it, so-called God. If you think He is a fool, so He created it, so it's wrong; if you think He has some power, if you think He has some brains in Him, and He created this whole world, so, there was a definite purpose for it. And He has sent you down here, and there is a definite purpose for that. You should solve that purpose; you should try to accomplish that purpose.
What is the purpose? Why? Why is this Knowledge revealed to them, to the premies? There is a definite purpose for that. Really this is what we should try to understand now that we have received Knowledge. And I'll tell you what the purpose is: to actually do service. See, before Knowledge, whatever we do is also service, but it's a service to our stomach; it's a service to our mind. But what service we do after Knowledge, to Guru Maharaj Ji, to spread this peace into this world, to bring Love, to bring that joy that we all have been waiting for, to work in that direction, is called real service.

Because it's only one time that we receive this gift, this body and we have to do something now. Otherwise, forget it. You never know! There are people who come to me saying, "Maharaj Ji, what do you think about reincarnation?" I'll tell you nobody has seen it till now. Nobody saw a soul fly from one body, go up in the heaven then go up in the hell and drop back to the earth. It's all concept but now you have this body. You are alive! There is some purpose for it. God is not a fool who gave you this body just like that. There is definitely some purpose and now that we have realized this Knowledge, the purpose is to go and tell people about it, to make 'em understand, to make 'em realize and premies if you need to become stronger because I understand some premies do need to become stronger before they can go out and do whatever I am saying.

You know, it's so strange, in a way, it's really, really strange that this Knowledge was even revealed to us. Now this I'll have to explain to you. Why it is strange is because we come into this world from the source. And that source is what this Knowledge is; it is what is within inside of us, Whatever we see in this world is a part of that. We are a part of it too. So we start from the source, and we come into this world. We are one with the source and then we depart and we come into this world. We come and we are born. We go through the whole channel of this earth, and the ways of this earth and everything. But then, after all that, after coming into this world, and going through all the miseries that a man has to put up with in this world, a man is revealed this Knowledge. When he is looking for it, when he is seeking it, he is revealed this Knowledge. And you know what that does - that's what's strange - it puts him right back from where he started. But that's where our destination is too. … Really premies, this is the reason that this Knowledge is so important for all of us. In an instant, in a second well, really, it isn't even a second - it takes us right back to our source, where we belong. Why are so many people experiencing all these difficulties and stuff? Because within inside of them there is something that longs to go back and to merge with what really created them, with what they really were when it started. It's such a blissful feeling, it's such a beautiful, beautiful feeling when we go back and merge, really, really merge with our source.

Without going to the feet of the Satguru, it's impossible to have this Knowledge. This is that Knowledge which Mira Bai said can be neither cut nor burned nor stolen. It can be meditated upon constantly, twenty-four hours a day. This Knowledge can be revealed only by the Grace of Satguru. What's the purpose of this human life? It isn't just to eat, drink and work. There is something else. There's a certain reason that God has given us this human body. This world is just like a big fair. We come here to this fair and we live. But whenever we come into this fair, certainly we buy something and we try to enjoy ourselves. Dear premies, if we come into this fair and then go away empty, what was the use of coming? If we don't fulfill the aim of our life, it isn't good.

You see how simple it is but believe me or not - maybe you won't believe it, but this is how simple it is - right now your mind is controlling you. Our aim is to control the mind. This is exactly what we have to do to and then we become one with that self consciousness. Because then there's nothing on top of us, then there is nothing to prevent us from being one with that vibration, one with that self-efflugent (sic), beautiful light, that experience and there's nothing that can block us and we then can really experience.

I mean, I can't even imagine how man can be as crazy as he is! The Lord Himself reincarnates, reincarnates, reincarnates Himself for the very purpose of saving us. And we do not even realize who gave us the authority to refuse Him! Who are we anyway? From which field do we come that we can reject, that we can refuse, that we can deny our Lord?

But there is something very, very important in this life. We come into this world just so that we can realize this life, so that we can learn to lead it properly And Guru Maharaj Ji comes, but who is Guru Maharaj Ji? Guru Maharaj Ji is a person, because he comes in a body, and what he does is show us the way, the path to salvation. So that this life doesn't just end six feet under the ground or in the holy River Ganges or lit up by fire. He shows us that there is a definite meaning to this life, so that this precious life is not just wasted: that is why Guru Maharaj Ji comes. In one sense, "Guru Maharaj Ji" is just a Hindi name that became very popular. But you can also calI him "Perfect Master," because he has perfected perfectness, he can teach us perfectness, and he can guide us along those lines. We call the person who teaches us a "Master," and if he teaches us perfectness, we can call him "Perfect Master." And that's what he is. He comes into this world to help us find the meaning of this life.

That Knowledge, that experience makes you premies and makes me Guru Maharaj Ji, because I impart that Knowledge to you and you experience that Knowledge. And today, my role in this world is to do, to impart that experience which I have imparted to you to everybody else who exists in this world. This is why I feel I am here - and there's no other purpose. Yes, of course, I go to sleep and I get up in the morning, but there's a little bit more than that. Why I go to sleep and why I get up has to do with the experience of Knowledge, imparting it to every individual in this world. And premies, today is the time. Today, in our lives, right at this moment we have an opportunity to put that difference, to put that mind aside and really, really experience Knowledge. This is why Jesus came, this is why Ram came, this is why Krishna came, this is why Mohammed came, this is why Buddha came. I have a practical experience of Knowledge, and I will never deny that. And nobody can come up to me and shatter that experience of Knowledge that I have. And I know it is beautiful. This is not a hypocritic thing; this is not a fake thing, this is a true experience of Knowledge that I talk about - and I want you to have that, period. Why? Because you're humans and you're alive. Isn't that a good reason? That is the only reason: because you're here, you have been born here. And to me, the only reason that we get born here is to plug back into that infinite source, into that infinite energy.

So every concept, every imagination that we have in this world, and that one goal we have in this world, we have to really find out what that goal really is in our lives that we have to accomplish. And that goal so far I have understood there's a lot of ways to explain that goal of our life, of our lifetime. But it's to complete one cycle from where we were born, from where we originated, from where that inner strength, that inner force came unto us - to go back to it, to become one with it, to me, is the goal of our life. And of course, you can break it down into a lot of different topics, and I'm not talking about birth. But no, birth into that life that never begins and never dies. I'm talking about birth into that eternal eternity, where there is complete harmony, where there is complete satisfaction.

And we have to understand one thing. And that is the purpose, the meaning of this life. And like I was saying yesterday, for me, I have experienced a lot in this world. And maybe what I have experienced is worth nothing, and maybe what I have experienced is not enough. But I have understood one thing in this world: that devotion, the essence of devotion, that total surrender, that total getting into satsang, service, and meditation and having faith in Guru Maharaj Ji, and that really putting aside in their own categories the things that belong there, but taking your whole self, self as you are, not as individuals, not as categorized as 'John' or 'Steve' or 'Duke' or whatever names you have, but that self, that inner self, that who you really are, what you really are, taking that, and putting it at the lotus feet of Guru Maharaj Ji, is it. That's not the purpose of that power that has been given to this man in this world. As individuals, the purpose of this is to really reunite with that Almighty, with that all-graceful thing, and become one with it, and enjoy that power source. But one of the questions we have to ask ourselves is that: who do we belong to, to be able to give and take, to have a transaction? This is completely for one purpose, and that is: so that as brothers and sisters, coming together in this stadium, we can realize that one thing that created us. So that we can become one - one with that Oneness. So that we can become one with that energy. And that is the only purpose! That bliss. So that premies can have their food! So the premies can have darshan, so premies can listen to Guru Maharaj Ji's satsang, and listen to satsang. Just one purpose, you know? Different activities, maybe, but one purpose.

And to me, my explanation for all those explanations that man has, is because he does not understand. Because if man - if the human race today really understood what the purpose of this life is, if this whole human race really understood the essence of this life … I mean, it's very clearly - like it's stated in Gita: This is the Raj Vidya. This is the Knowledge of all the knowledges. … But to me, what makes sense is when this one person realizes Knowledge in his life, instead of saying, "This knowledge and that knowledge," it's just flat: "This is the Raj Vidya. This is the ultimate Knowledge. This is the Knowledge of all the knowledges." Because it is!

Of course, today, in body, Shri Maharaj Ji really doesn't exist within us. But yet we know, and we can feel it, and we can understand, and we can really - well, quite clearly see, that the reason why he came in this world, the reason why he even got born into this world, the reason why he went from place to place, spreading this beautiful Word, spreading this very beautiful message to all people of the world, had no distinction. He had no reservations. He went to everybody, door to door, just telling them that they have this human life, and that in this human life it is possible to realize the purpose of this human life, to realize the goal of this human life. It is possible to merge with that oneness, to merge with that incredible thing, to become one with that ultimate.
That experience of Knowledge is within inside of us, because that Knowledge is within inside of us. But we need Guru Maharaj Ji, we need Guru Maharaj Ji to be able to tune that so that we can hear it, so that we can feel it, so that we can emerge in it. And by Guru Maharaj Ji's Grace, and only by Guru Maharaj Ji's Grace, have we already reached to the experience of what we are, of what we have.

What I am trying to say is that, overall, whose Grace is it that ties it together into any possible sense? What people say is that by the Grace of God you have life. Now I agree. He runs His Grace out of you and you've had it. And that's true. But then, what is the purpose of having this life if you can't realize the aim of this life - if you can't fulfill the aim of this life - which can only happen by the Grace of Guru Maharaj Ji? So from beginning to end, it's the Grace of Guru Maharaj Ji that brings us together, that brings us to the point where we can realize Knowledge and fulfill our aim. And only he, only Guru Maharaj Ji, can then turn around and give us enough Grace again to be able to surrender to him, to be able to become one with him.
For each of you as individuals, you have to make that decision that you really, really want to surrender, to be able to become one with Guru Maharaj Ji, to be able to experience the purpose of this life, to be able to accomplish the aim of this life, to have God-realization - you name it - to accomplish that - except materialistic and worldy things. They just don't get accomplished.

And there is just one set purpose of life. And everybody comes into this world, and every Perfect Master that has come in this world so far has pointed out that purpose of life. And it's been exactly the same, again and again and again and again. And so when we realize that Knowledge … I mean, it's like theories and words and they can only take you so far. But the experience takes you miles beyond. That experience takes you even further and further and further and further.
And this world would just completely collapse if Perfect Master stopped coming. I can't possibly even imagine or foresee what this world would be like. Because it would be completely incredible to just see the beginning and the end of the world in the same minute, in the same second, in the same hour. It'd be just gone! Finished! I mean, with the Perfect Master in this world there's enough problems. And with him not here, it just feels like the whole thing would just go and that would be it.

And when we let go to that Guru Maharaj Ji, when we let go and surrender ourself … Because who are we? Before that we were nothing. After that we are nothing. But we become one when we accomplish the purpose of why we are really here in this world. So premies, I hope I'll see you very soon. Until then, again, keep doing satsang, service and meditation. And just flow with that experience. Because without that experience, we're lifeless. With that experience, we become who we are. Not Joe Blow. Not Smith, not Kathy, not John, not this, not that. But we become who we really are. And if we forget who we really are, if we let go of Guru Maharaj Ji and really forget who we really are in the true sense of the word, then that's almost like commiting suicide, that's almost like dying.

You look at this world and it's really not coming to any place that's even worth talking about. And yet and and and and at every step, of course, there's all these traps built in for man to just come over and eat it, eat it you know and get trapped in it. And it happens so much, you know, you just look, you just look at this world and it's just like,"Wow" it's really amazing because people don't have any goal, people don't have any motivation, people don't have any real understanding of what is the purpose of this life or what you can do with this life."

Yet remember one thing: that that Guru Maharaj Ji, who is Creator, who is the Sustainer, and who is the Destroyer, has love enough for his devotees to come onto this Earth for his devotees; then absolutely, unquestionably, there are no bounds to what can happen. All we have to do is to become that devotee, to have that devotion. That's all: that faith, that surrender, to Guru Maharaj Ji, that love that is sincere, that comes from our hearts for Guru Maharaj Ji. Not in our imagination, but in reality. If we can become a devotee … If there is Guru Maharaj Ji and then a devotee, when they join, then there is devotion. And it is said that when that happens, when Guru Maharaj Ji and a devotee are bound together by devotion, then the purpose of that soul that devotee has been completed. That's it. There is no more to be done. There is nothing left to be done. It has received the stage beyond liberation. It has received, it has joined, it has merged in the state which is beyond, above and beyond -- joined its Creator. It has joined its Owner. It has joined where it came from; it has joined back to its own.

This is the occasion, this is the moment, that every soul is born for: to be with Guru Maharaj Ji. And for that moment to be fulfilled, that is the destiny of this life as far as I'm concerned. There can be philosophies, there can be … there is our good old philosophy of karma. This is where all the karmas died. Because who has ever deserved anything to be a part of this moment? What karma can you possibly do, what karma can you possibly do that can bring you to the point where you can be physically present when Guru Maharaj Ji is there, listening to Guru Maharaj Ji's satsang? What is it? What can you do? Neither climbing a mountain nor being good to anybody wouldn't bring you here. This is where karma stops. This is where time stops. This is where the dimensions of the world stop. And it can. The world can stop. Only one thing can be alive: just you and Guru Maharaj Ji, you in that moment. And it happens for so many of us.

Why such a work of genius is created after all. Why so much goes into it. Why such an incredible creation? There's a very different, definite purpose to it. Olympia, London, Guru Puja video
